Sant Antoni de Portmany has unveiled plans for a major transformation of the children’s park in Ses Païsses, with a €4.28 million project set to turn the existing space into a much larger family, leisure and community park.

The project, presented by Sant Antoni Town Hall on September 22, covers approximately 7,525 square metres of the existing park, which has a total area of around 7,800 square metres.

The municipality says the renewed space will become the largest children’s park on the island of Ibiza, although that description comes from the town hall and is not an independently established island-wide ranking.

The plans include a 22-metre zip line, a large wooden castle structure, water-play fountains, sports facilities, a circuit for bicycles, skates and scooters, family areas, a permanent stage and a café kiosk.

The project has been approved by the town hall’s Governing Board, but construction has not yet begun.

A €4.28 Million Transformation

The planned investment is €4,283,643.26 including VAT.

The construction period is expected to be 12 months from the signing of the official start-of-works document, with a two-year guarantee period once the works are completed.

According to the latest information from the municipality, the project is expected to move into the contracting process in the coming months.

That means the features presented this week are part of an approved project rather than facilities that are already under construction.

A 2,385 m² Children’s Play Area

The heart of the new park will be an expanded children’s play area covering approximately 2,385 square metres.

It will be designed for different age groups and include climbing structures, multi-use play equipment, swings, seesaws, carousels, integrated trampolines, spring-mounted games and rotating elements.

The centrepiece will be a large wooden structure standing 7.35 metres high and designed to resemble a castle.

The structure will include towers, several slides and ramps, creating the main focal point of the children's area.

The 22-Metre Zip Line

One of the most distinctive additions will be a 22-metre zip line.

Sant Antoni Mayor Marcos Serra said the feature responds to a request raised by children during the municipality’s children’s council sessions.

The zip line is intended to add a more adventurous element to the park alongside the traditional play equipment.

The municipality describes it as the longest zip line in Ibiza.

Water Play for the Summer Months

The project also includes an area of interactive water fountains.

The fountains will be integrated into the paving and are planned to operate during the summer season.

The feature is designed to provide an additional play area during Ibiza’s hottest months while creating another space for families to use together.

The municipality says the wider design will also include drinking-water fountains within the children's area.

A 990 m² Sports Area

The park will also have a dedicated sports area covering approximately 990 square metres.

It will include multi-sport courts for basketball and recreational football, a table-tennis area and an outdoor fitness zone with exercise equipment intended for older users.

The design therefore extends beyond children's play, creating facilities for different age groups within the same park.

A 710 m² Circuit for Bikes, Skates and Scooters

Another major addition will be a 710-square-metre circuit for bicycles, skates and scooters.

The route will have a continuous layout with gentle changes in elevation, curves and undulations.

It is designed as an active recreation area rather than a conventional skatepark, giving younger visitors another option for movement and outdoor play.

Shade Is a Major Part of the Design

With Ibiza's strong summer heat, shade is a significant element of the project.

The entire main play and recreation zone is planned to receive shade from textile canopies.

The design will also preserve existing trees and use their natural shade where possible.

The municipality says retaining the existing vegetation is part of the strategy to maintain the park’s green character while improving its facilities.

Family Areas and Picnic Spaces

The project includes approximately 260 square metres dedicated to family seating and celebration areas.

These spaces will include picnic tables, benches and shaded areas positioned close to the children's facilities.

The layout is intended to make it easier for adults to supervise children while also creating spaces where families can spend longer periods in the park.

A 650 m² Multifunctional Plaza

The redesigned park will also include a multifunctional plaza covering approximately 650 square metres.

The plaza is intended for cultural, recreational, children's and municipal activities, as well as community events.

It will be complemented by a permanent stage measuring 124 square metres.

These two spaces are separate elements of the project, with the 650 m² figure referring to the plaza and the 124 m² figure referring specifically to the stage.

A Café Kiosk and Public Toilets

A new 65-square-metre kiosk-café is also planned.

The building will have a 55-square-metre terrace and accessible public toilets.

The facility is intended to provide a support service for families and visitors using the park and for people attending events held in the new multifunctional areas.

Accessibility at the Centre of the Design

The municipality says accessibility is one of the main principles of the redevelopment.

Existing paths and surfaces will be renewed to create continuous pedestrian routes designed to be safer and more accessible.

The park will also include new urban furniture, bicycle parking, water fountains and upgraded infrastructure.

The children's play area will use impact-absorbing continuous surfacing and dedicated safety fencing.

New Lighting and Surveillance

Public lighting throughout the park will be renewed using high-efficiency LED technology.

A new video-surveillance system is also planned to strengthen security and assist with monitoring and maintenance.

The redevelopment will additionally require upgrades to several underground and service networks, including water supply, sewerage, drainage, irrigation, electricity and telecommunications.

Automatic Irrigation and Water Efficiency

The project includes a new automatic irrigation system adapted to the redesigned landscape.

The municipality says the system will be designed to optimise water consumption while maintaining the park's landscaped areas.

The plans also prioritise durable, low-maintenance materials and the preservation of the existing trees.

These measures form part of the project's broader emphasis on sustainability and efficient use of resources.

A Park Designed for Different Generations

Although the project is centred on children, the overall design is intended to serve a much wider age range.

Young children will have dedicated play structures and water features, while older children can use the zip line and wheeled-sports circuit.

Teenagers and adults will have access to sports facilities, while older visitors are specifically included through the outdoor exercise area.

Family seating, the café, plaza and stage are intended to create shared spaces rather than separating each age group completely.

The Project Came From Local Children’s Requests

One of the more unusual details behind the project is the origin of the 22-metre zip line.

According to the mayor, the feature was requested by children themselves during the municipality's children's plenary sessions.

That gives the project a direct connection with local participation and explains why an adventure feature such as the zip line became one of its most prominent elements.

Ses Païsses to Receive a Major Public-Space Upgrade

The park is located on Calle Clavell in Ses Païsses, in the municipality of Sant Antoni de Portmany.

The council says the park redevelopment is intended to improve the neighbourhood's public spaces while providing a larger facility for families and community activities.

The project is being presented alongside planned road resurfacing works in the wider Can Bonet and Ses Païsses area.

Residents Welcome the Park but Want Basic Issues Addressed

The announcement has also prompted a response from the Can Bonet residents' association.

The association said it welcomes investment in children's spaces, family areas and quality public facilities, but also called on the municipality to address other problems affecting residents.

These include what the association describes as a lack of a safe pedestrian route to the nearest bus stop, problems with street cleaning and waste collection, damaged pavements and roads, and the lack of adequate shade at an existing children's park in Can Bonet.

The association's comments are its own assessment of neighbourhood needs and are separate from the town hall's presentation of the new park project.

The Project Is Not Yet Under Construction

Despite the impressive renderings and detailed plans, the new park is not yet a finished facility.

The project has been approved, but the contracting process still needs to be completed.

The latest municipal information indicates that the tender process is expected in the coming months, with construction planned to take approximately 12 months from the formal start of the works.

An exact opening date therefore cannot yet be given.

A New Landmark for Families in Sant Antoni

If completed as currently designed, the Ses Païsses redevelopment will dramatically change the existing park.

The project combines children's play, adventure, water, sport, wheeled activities, shaded family areas, cultural space and everyday services in a single public complex.

Its scale also makes it one of the larger public-space projects currently planned by Sant Antoni Town Hall.

The town hall's objective is for the park to become a major family and community destination within Sant Antoni and across Ibiza.

A New Family Destination for Sant Antoni

Ses Païsses could soon have one of the island's most ambitious public family spaces.

The plans combine a large children's playground with a 22-metre zip line, water-play fountains, sports facilities, wheeled-sports areas, family picnic spaces, a café and a permanent stage.

But for now, the project remains at the planning and contracting stage.

The next milestone will be the tender and formal start of construction. Once that process is completed, the 12-month building period will begin and Sant Antoni's planned new family park can move from architectural renderings to reality.
