Storm Adam: Torrents Overflow in Santa Eulària and Sant Joan as Five Roads Close in Ibiza

October 19, 2026

Northern Ibiza faced a particularly difficult morning on Monday, 19 October, as intense rainfall associated with Storm Adam caused torrents to overflow and flooded sections of roads around Santa Eulària and Sant Joan.

The worsening conditions prompted renewed concern from emergency officials, who warned that sudden downpours were proving difficult to predict and could continue into the afternoon. Residents were urged to avoid unnecessary journeys, particularly in areas affected by flooding.

Torrents Overflow After Intense Downpours

Pablo Gárriz, Director General of Emergencies for the Balearic Government, said the main areas of concern on Monday morning were Santa Eulària and parts of Sant Joan.

He explained that the storm was producing highly active weather cells capable of releasing intense rainfall suddenly, including in locations where such heavy precipitation had not been expected.

Authorities reported overflowing sections of the sa Llavanera torrent in the northeast of Ibiza, as well as flooding at a point along the Santa Eulària river system.

The volume of water flowing through the torrents left sections of roads inundated, creating additional risks for motorists and residents travelling through the affected areas.

Five Roads Closed in Santa Eulària

The Santa Eulària town hall confirmed that five roads were closed to traffic because of the heavy rainfall:

  • The road to es Figueral.

  • The road to Cala Llenya.

  • The road to Cala Mestella.

  • The road to Morna.

  • The road to Atzaró.

Emergency officials also reported three road closures in the sa Cala area as conditions deteriorated in northern Ibiza.

Flooding was reported around es Figueral and Cala de Sant Vicent, with the effects of the rainfall extending towards the Serra de Morna and Sant Joan.

The town hall urged residents to take extra precautions, avoid unnecessary travel and respect road signs and instructions from emergency and security personnel. Drivers were specifically warned not to attempt to cross flooded stretches of road.

Emergency Services Warn of Further Heavy Rain

Gárriz said the rainfall episode was proving significantly more intense than initially anticipated. At the time of his morning statements, authorities could not establish a reliable timeframe for when the danger would ease.

He warned that intense downpours could continue well into the afternoon and stressed that apparent periods of calmer weather should not be interpreted as confirmation that the risk had passed.

The unpredictable nature of the storm meant that areas experiencing a temporary lull could still be affected by another sudden burst of heavy rain.

Weather Warning Lowered, but Emergency Monitoring Continues

At 11:55 on Monday, AEMET lowered its meteorological warning level for Ibiza and Formentera to yellow, according to the reported update. The orange warning had initially been expected to remain in place until 15:00.

However, the change in the meteorological warning did not mean that the flooding risk had disappeared.

Emergency officials confirmed that the relevant severity levels under the Balearic flood-response plan, Inunbal, and the Meteobal weather-emergency plan remained in place. Continued monitoring was considered necessary as Storm Adam moved across the archipelago.

Residents Urged to Follow Official Instructions

The authorities continued to advise people to avoid unnecessary journeys, stay away from torrents and flooded areas, and check road conditions before travelling.

Anyone encountering a flooded road should not attempt to cross it on foot or by vehicle. Water levels and currents can change rapidly, making apparently passable routes dangerous.

With northern Ibiza among the areas most affected during Monday morning, residents and visitors were urged to remain alert and follow updates from local authorities and emergency services.

Ibiza One Stop will continue to follow developments as the effects of Storm Adam evolve across the island.
