Ibiza Enters Flu Epidemic Phase as Cases Reach 50 per 100,000 Residents

October 16, 2026

Ibiza has exceeded the epidemiological threshold for influenza, with 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants compared with the threshold of 36. The Balearic Government is encouraging vaccination ahead of the wider campaign opening on 19 October.

Ibiza has entered the epidemic phase for seasonal influenza after the latest epidemiological report recorded 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, exceeding the threshold of 36 cases per 100,000 used to identify the start of an epidemic.

The figures, reported on Thursday, 15 October 2026, indicate that influenza activity has reached epidemic levels on the island earlier in the season than many residents might expect.

However, the increase has not yet translated into greater pressure on emergency departments. Balearic Health Minister Manuela García said the rise in cases had not resulted in a noticeable increase in demand for emergency care or other parts of the healthcare system.

The health authorities are urging residents to take advantage of the seasonal vaccination campaign as it expands to the general population.

Health Authorities Report No Increased Pressure on Emergency Departments

The latest figures place Ibiza above the established epidemiological threshold, but officials have stressed that the situation must be understood in context.

García confirmed that the island had reached the threshold associated with the epidemic phase. She also said health services had not observed a corresponding increase in pressure on emergency departments.

The distinction is important: an epidemic threshold is a measure of disease activity within the population, rather than an indication that hospitals are overwhelmed.

Public health authorities continue to monitor the evolution of influenza across the Balearic Islands as the autumn and winter respiratory-virus season develops.

Flu Vaccination Opens to the General Public on 19 October

The Balearic Government's 2026-2027 influenza vaccination campaign began earlier this month in schools, care homes and other priority settings.

From Monday, 19 October, vaccination will become available to the general population through health centres across the islands, including Ibiza and Formentera.

The authorities are encouraging eligible residents to get vaccinated in preparation for the coming months, when seasonal influenza typically circulates more widely.

The campaign has also increased the number of vaccine doses available compared with the previous season, according to the regional health authorities.

Around 2,600 Children Expected to Be Vaccinated in Pitiusan Schools

One of the main elements of this year's campaign is the expansion of childhood vaccination.

Public Health expects to vaccinate approximately 2,600 children aged between three and five in schools across Ibiza and Formentera.

The wider campaign also expands the age range covered by the school-based vaccination programme, with the announced arrangements extending childhood vaccination up to 11 years of age. Vaccination in schools is offered subject to the required consent from parents or legal guardians.

Health professionals are using age-appropriate approaches to make the process easier for younger children and to explain how vaccination helps the immune system recognise and respond to influenza.

Last season, approximately 40% of children in the Balearic Islands received a flu vaccine. The authorities want to increase coverage during the 2026-2027 campaign.

Why Vaccination Matters Ahead of Winter

Seasonal influenza can cause fever, respiratory symptoms and other complications, with older people, young children, pregnant women and people with certain chronic conditions among those who may face a greater risk of severe illness.

Vaccination is intended to reduce the risk of complications and help protect vulnerable groups as influenza circulates through the community.

Residents should consult their health centre or the regional health service for information about eligibility, appointments and the vaccination options available to them.

Ibiza's Flu Situation Will Continue to Be Monitored

Ibiza's entry into the epidemic phase highlights the importance of monitoring respiratory infections even before the traditional peak of the winter season.

Although current reports indicate that emergency departments have not experienced additional pressure linked to the rise in influenza, case numbers may change as the season progresses.

The Balearic Government is continuing its vaccination campaign and encouraging residents to seek information through official health channels as the island prepares for the coming months.
