A total of 128 volunteers took part in the final beach-cleaning session of the 2026 season organised by O Beach Ibiza and Bam-Bu-Ku along the Sant Antoni coastline on Saturday, September 19.

The latest clean-up was the fourth and final session of this year's programme, which the two businesses have organised for the eighth consecutive year in collaboration with Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Hall. The initiative brings together residents, visitors, workers and local sports clubs to help remove waste from the coastline.

Final Clean-Up of the Season

The session began at 9:30am at Bam-Bu-Ku, where participants gathered before spreading out across different areas of the coastline to collect litter.

Local sports clubs were particularly well represented during the final event, with participants from football, rhythmic gymnastics, basketball, futsal and swimming among the volunteers.

The organisers reported a total of 128 participants for the final session, making it one of the most strongly attended clean-ups of the summer programme.

Cigarette Butts Remain a Persistent Problem

The organisers said that an exact total weight or volume of waste collected had not yet been calculated following the session.

However, volunteers filled numerous rubbish bags during the clean-up, with cigarette butts once again standing out as one of the most difficult forms of litter to remove.

Small cigarette filters can become buried in the sand, making them harder to locate and collect than larger pieces of rubbish.

Volunteers also reported finding items including cans and discarded vapes during the morning.

Participants Report Less Waste

Some returning volunteers said they noticed less litter than in previous years.

Cristina Corrales, a volunteer who has taken part in earlier clean-ups, described the beach as relatively clean this time, although cigarette butts remained noticeable. Her group of around ten people estimated that they filled approximately ten 30-litre rubbish bags.

Representatives of O Beach Ibiza Gimnástica Club also said they had noticed cleaner streets compared with previous years.

The organisers suggested that the rainfall experienced in the days before the clean-up may have displaced some waste, meaning that the lower amount found during the session does not necessarily provide a complete picture of the season's overall litter levels.

Sports Clubs Take Part

The participation of local sports organisations was one of the defining features of the final clean-up.

The Club Deportivo Social Ses Païsses was among those taking part, with its president and coordinator, Óscar Trigo Sampietro, highlighting the educational value of involving younger participants in environmental activities.

The organisers said the involvement of sports teams also helped connect the collective spirit of sport with the responsibility of caring for the coastline.

Eight Years of Beach Clean-Ups

The initiative began in 2018 and has since brought together hundreds of volunteers, including O Beach Group employees, residents, visitors, families and sports teams sponsored by the group.

For O Beach, the programme is intended to go beyond simply collecting rubbish by encouraging community participation and environmental awareness in Sant Antoni.

The initiative receives support from Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Hall, including assistance with logistics, permits and promotion. STAY OK Team also collaborated with the programme.

The 2026 Programme

The 2026 programme was announced as a series of monthly beach clean-ups, beginning in May and continuing through September. The final session took place on September 19, following earlier clean-ups scheduled for May 23, June 27, July 25 and August 29.

Each session was planned to begin at 9:30am at Bam-Bu-Ku and last approximately one hour, followed by a complimentary coffee break for participants.

The September clean-up marked the end of this year's programme, with the organisers again bringing together members of the local community to help care for the Sant Antoni coastline.

A Community Environmental Initiative

The latest session closed another summer of joint environmental activity between O Beach Ibiza, Bam-Bu-Ku, local sports organisations, volunteers and the Sant Antoni Town Hall.

While the exact amount of waste collected during the final clean-up had not been established at the time of reporting, the organisers said cigarette butts remained a recurring issue, while participants generally perceived less litter than in previous editions.
