Dalt Vila was transformed into a major cultural stage over Friday and Saturday as Ibiza joined the ninth edition of La Noche del Patrimonio, a nationwide celebration taking place simultaneously in Spain's 15 World Heritage Cities.

Ibiza's programme brought 15 free activities to the historic centre, combining contemporary dance, music, theatre, guided visits and special nighttime openings of historic and cultural spaces.

BENTHOS Takes Centre Stage

One of the highlights was the premiere of BENTHOS, a contemporary dance piece created by choreographer, dancer and researcher Adrián Herrera following an artistic residency in Ibiza.

The performance took place on Saturday night in the Claustre del Ayuntamiento, with two presentations at 9pm and 10pm.

Inspired by Posidonia oceanica, the production explored the interdependence, fragility and capacity for regeneration of marine ecosystems.

Through movement, the dancers represented processes of balance, degradation and recovery within Posidonia meadows, creating a dialogue between Ibiza's natural heritage and contemporary artistic creation.

Music Inside the Historic City

Music was another central part of the programme.

Santi Pérez and Anikó Pusztai performed at Es Refectori on Friday evening, while the Ensemble de Saxos played at the Mirador de la plaza d'Espanya.

A jazz quartet later performed in the Claustre del Ayuntamiento, giving visitors the opportunity to experience live music inside historic spaces normally associated with the city's architectural heritage.

Dalt Vila Through a Renaissance Story

The programme also included theatricalised tours designed to transport visitors back to Renaissance-era Ibiza.

The 75-minute route followed two fictionalised 16th-century Ibicencans, Pere and Elisabet, through the streets of Dalt Vila while a guide provided historical context.

The tour passed sites including the Portal de ses Taules and the Cathedral and attracted participants of different ages, including families with young children.

The format allowed visitors to discover the historic centre through storytelling rather than a conventional guided tour.

Historic Spaces Open After Dark

Six cultural and heritage spaces extended their opening hours during the two-day celebration.

These included the Museu d'Art Contemporani d'Eivissa, Museu Puget, Centre d'Interpretació Madina Yabisa, Arxiu Històric d'Eivissa i Formentera, Sala Refectori and Es Polvorí.

All offered free admission during their extended evening hours.

Rare Historical Documents on Display

The Arxiu Històric d'Eivissa i Formentera also offered visitors a chance to see at least nine royal letters from Alfons V el Magnànim.

Madina Yabisa presented Una noche en las murallas de Dalt Vila, an itinerary exploring what life was like inside the fortified city after nightfall, when surveillance and defence systems became particularly important.

The programme also included special guided visits to temporary exhibitions at Museu Puget and MACE.

An Island's Heritage in a Different Light

La Noche del Patrimonio is designed to make historic sites more accessible through contemporary cultural experiences.

In Ibiza, the programme brought together architecture, history, music, theatre, contemporary dance and visual culture across the fortified city.

The approach also encouraged residents to experience Dalt Vila outside its usual daytime rhythm, with several museums and historic spaces remaining open until 11pm.

Part of a National Celebration

Ibiza's 15 activities formed part of a national programme involving more than 500 free cultural events across Spain's 15 World Heritage Cities.

The initiative aims to connect historic heritage with contemporary cultural creation, while encouraging residents and visitors to engage with monuments and historic centres in new ways.

For Ibiza, Dalt Vila provided the setting for that idea to play out across an entire weekend.

A Living Heritage Site

The success of the programme demonstrates how Dalt Vila can function as more than a preserved historic monument.

During La Noche del Patrimonio, its streets, museums, walls and historic buildings became active cultural spaces, hosting performances, exhibitions, guided experiences and live music.

BENTHOS added a particularly contemporary dimension by bringing the story of Posidonia into the historic centre, linking Ibiza's natural and architectural heritage through dance.

Ibiza's Heritage Takes Centre Stage

The ninth edition of La Noche del Patrimonio has once again placed Dalt Vila at the centre of Ibiza's cultural calendar.

For two evenings, visitors were able to explore the fortified city through music, theatre, history and contemporary artistic expression, with all 15 activities offered free of charge.

The programme provided a different perspective on one of Ibiza's most important landmarks, demonstrating that Dalt Vila's heritage can be both protected from the past and actively lived in the present.
