A resident of Ibiza Town has raised concerns about jet skis travelling at high speed close to the historic walls of Dalt Vila, prompting the city authorities to ask the relevant maritime authorities to examine the situation.

The complaint focuses on the proximity and speed of the personal watercraft, with the resident warning that their movements close to the coastline could create a safety risk for people using the area.

High-Speed Jet Skis Reported Beneath the Historic Walls

According to the complaint, jet skis have repeatedly been seen passing at speed in the waters below Dalt Vila.

The resident has raised particular concern about how close the watercraft are operating to the shore and the potential danger created when travelling at high speed in an area also used by other vessels and people in the water.

The issue is especially sensitive because Dalt Vila forms part of Ibiza's UNESCO World Heritage Site and overlooks one of the busiest maritime areas of Ibiza Town.

City Council Asks Maritime Authorities to Investigate

The Ibiza Town Council has indicated that maritime safety in the area falls within the responsibilities of the competent maritime authorities and has requested that the reported situation be examined.

The municipality itself does not have sole jurisdiction over all navigation activity at sea, meaning any investigation into possible breaches of maritime regulations would need to involve the appropriate authorities.

At present, the complaint does not establish that a specific offence has been committed by any individual jet-ski user.

What the Rules Say About Jet Ski Safety

Spanish regulations place strict limits on where and how jet skis can operate.

Jet skis are prohibited from entering marked bathing areas. Where there are no marked bathing areas, navigation is generally prohibited within 200 metres of the coastline, except for launching or landing, when the craft must travel perpendicular to the shore and at no more than 3 knots.

The regulations also require operators to navigate prudently and prohibit reckless behaviour.

A Busy Area of Ibiza's Coastline

The waters around Ibiza Town are used by a mixture of recreational boats, passenger vessels, private yachts, water-sports operators and other maritime traffic, particularly during the summer season.

This makes separation between fast-moving watercraft and other users an important safety consideration.

Concerns over jet skis are not unique to Dalt Vila. Across Ibiza and the Balearic Islands, authorities and residents have increasingly raised questions about maritime congestion, unsafe navigation and the presence of motorised watercraft close to bathing areas.
