The number of people affected in e-scooter incidents attended by SAMU061 in the Balearic Islands fell by more than half during the first eight months of 2026 compared with the same period last year.

According to data from the Balearic health service IB-Salut, 268 people were affected in incidents involving e-scooters between January and August 2026, compared with 540 during the same period in 2025.

The 2026 figure represents a decline of around 50.4%.

Fewer Incidents Than in Previous Years

The reduction is also significant compared with 2024.

Between January and August 2024, SAMU061 recorded 684 people affected in e-scooter incidents, meaning the 2026 figure is around 61% lower than two years earlier.

The figures concern incidents attended by the emergency medical service and should not be interpreted as a complete record of every e-scooter collision or fall that occurred across the islands.

Summer Still Sees the Highest Activity

Despite the overall decline, summer remains the period with the greatest number of incidents.

Of the 268 cases recorded between January and August this year, 104 occurred during July and August. That represents 38.8% of the eight-month total.

SAMU061 said monthly activity practically doubles during the summer period.

Ibiza Accounts for 19% of Cases

Mallorca recorded the largest share of the incidents attended by SAMU061, with 202 cases, equivalent to 75.4% of the Balearic total.

Ibiza accounted for 19%, followed by Menorca with 5.2% and Formentera with 0.4%.

The data also show that Ibiza's share of the regional total has increased. It represented 11.3% of those affected between January and August 2024, compared with 19% during the same period in 2026.

Most Affected Age Group Is 21 to 30

People aged between 21 and 30 made up the largest age group, with 74 cases, or 27.6% of the total.

They were followed by people aged 31 to 40, who accounted for 23.9%, while those aged 11 to 20 represented 20.9%.

SAMU061 said almost half of those involved were aged 30 or younger.

Men Represent Almost 59% of Cases

Men accounted for 58.6% of those affected, compared with 36.2% women.

In 5.2% of cases, the person's sex was not recorded in the available data.

Most Patients Required Further Medical Care

A large proportion of those involved needed to be transferred or referred to a healthcare facility.

SAMU061 reported that 79.1% of the people affected were transferred or referred for treatment, while 20.9% were assessed and treated at the scene without requiring onward transfer.

Head Injuries and Multiple Contusions Among the Most Common

The most frequently recorded injuries included coded head trauma and multiple contusions, each accounting for 10.1% of the total.

Injuries affecting the knee, leg, ankle or foot represented 7.1%, while abrasions or friction burns accounted for 4.5%.

Alcohol intoxication was recorded in 3.7% of cases.

Fiscalía Calls for Broader Safety Measures

The regional figures come as Spain's Public Prosecutor's Office continues to draw attention to safety issues involving vehicles of personal mobility, the legal category that includes e-scooters.

In its 2025 annual report, published in September 2026, the Fiscalía General del Estado called for a broad range of measures, including supervision, enforcement and sanctions as well as preventive and educational measures. Prosecutors noted both the vulnerability of VMP users when interacting with motor vehicles and the potential danger they can pose to pedestrians.

The national warning is based on prosecutors' observations and cases and should not be read as a statistical explanation for the fall recorded by SAMU061 in the Balearics.

New Rules Are Also Being Introduced

Spain has been tightening the regulatory framework surrounding personal mobility vehicles.

A law that created compulsory civil-liability insurance for qualifying light personal vehicles entered into force for that insurance requirement on January 2, 2026.

A separate Royal Decree regulating the national register for light personal vehicles requires qualifying vehicles to be registered and identified, while transitional arrangements remain in place for certain non-certified mobility vehicles until January 22, 2027.

Further amendments to traffic rules are scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2026, with some provisions concerning personal mobility vehicles entering into force later.

A Significant Regional Decline

The 268 people affected in SAMU061-attended e-scooter incidents during the first eight months of 2026 represent a substantial reduction from both 2025 and 2024.

At the same time, the data show that these incidents have not disappeared. Summer continues to be the busiest period, most affected people require further medical attention, and Ibiza accounts for almost one-fifth of the regional total.

The figures provide a snapshot of incidents attended by the emergency medical service and do not establish why the number has fallen.
