Carl Craig will bring a deeply personal side of his career to Ibiza next week, combining the island premiere of his documentary with a special edition of Detroit Love at 528 Ibiza.

The Detroit techno pioneer will present Desire: The Carl Craig Story on Tuesday, September 15, with the screening followed by a public Q&A before the evening moves from the cinema to the dance floor.

The documentary will be screened at the Teatro de 528 Ibiza from 6pm.

Desire: The Carl Craig Story offers an intimate look at the artist's life and career while placing his story within the wider history of Detroit, the city where he grew up and which played a defining role in his musical development.

Rather than focusing solely on Craig's achievements, the film explores his family background, his decision to pursue an artistic path and the personal challenges that have accompanied more than three decades in electronic music.

Detroit itself becomes an important part of the narrative, with the city's industrial decline, resilience and regeneration providing the backdrop to Craig's development as an artist.

More Than 35 Years of Techno

Craig is widely regarded as one of the key figures of the second generation of Detroit techno.

Across more than 35 years, his work has repeatedly crossed boundaries between electronic music, jazz and classical music, taking his compositions beyond the conventional club environment and into concert halls and other formats.

The documentary also addresses a more reflective stage of his career, examining decisions that could take him away from the dance floor and considering his relationship with music, Detroit and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

The film includes contributions from a number of artists and collaborators connected to Craig's career and the international development of Detroit's electronic sound.

Among those featured are Gilles Peterson, Roni Size, Laurent Garnier, DJ Minx, Kenny Larkin, Moritz von Oswald and James Lavelle.

From the Screen to the Dance Floor

After the screening and Q&A, the event will continue with a special Detroit Love session produced in collaboration with Pikes Presents.

The programme will run across the Garden Stage and Teatro, with Carl Craig joined by fellow Detroit legend Moodymann, as well as Mirko Loko, Idriss D and Ryan O Gorman.

The event is scheduled to continue until 4am, turning the documentary screening into a full evening dedicated to Detroit's enduring influence on electronic music.

The combination makes the September 15 event unusual in Ibiza's club calendar.

Audiences will first encounter Craig through his personal history, hearing him discuss the documentary and answering questions directly before experiencing his music in the club later that same night.
