Paloma San Basilio Brings Dulcinea to Can Ventosa in Ibiza

September 12, 2026

Paloma San Basilio will take to the stage at Can Ventosa in Ibiza Town on Sunday, September 20, with Dulcinea, a theatrical and musical production that gives a new voice to one of the most famous female characters in Spanish literature.

The performance combines theatre and music to explore the character of Dulcinea, the idealised woman imagined by Don Quixote, while questioning the expectations and ideals traditionally placed upon her.

Dulcinea Reclaims Her Own Voice

The production presents Dulcinea, or Aldonza Lorenzo, from a different perspective.

Rather than accepting the role of the perfect woman created through the eyes of Cervantes' famous knight-errant, this version imagines her rebelling against that ideal and questioning the burden of being turned into someone else's fantasy.

The story uses humour, irony, pain and moments of sincerity to explore whether the world still needs the idea of the “perfect woman” represented by Dulcinea.

Paloma San Basilio Takes the Lead

Paloma San Basilio stars in the production, bringing more than five decades of experience in music and musical theatre to the role.

Born in Madrid in 1950, San Basilio has built an extensive career across Spain and Latin America, both as a recording artist and stage performer.

She has also received numerous awards during her career, including the Latin Grammy for Musical Excellence.

In Dulcinea, she takes on a version of the character that is described as more rebellious, human and emotionally complex.

A Theatrical and Musical Production

The production combines San Basilio's voice with a dramatic structure designed to bring Cervantes' character into a contemporary conversation.

Musical direction is by Julio Awad, while the dramaturgy is by Juan Carlos Rubio.

Together, they reinterpret Dulcinea through themes that remain relevant today, including gender expectations, idealisation and the tension between appearance and reality.

Can Ventosa Hosts the Performance

Dulcinea will be performed at the auditorium of the Espai Cultural de Can Ventosa in Ibiza Town on Sunday, September 20.

The performance begins at 8pm.

Tickets are priced at €20 in advance and €22 at the box office, making the production an accessible addition to Ibiza's autumn cultural programme.

A Contemporary Take on a Classic Character

The production uses one of Spanish literature's most recognisable figures to address questions that extend beyond the original story.

Dulcinea has traditionally existed largely through Don Quixote's imagination, defined by his idealised vision of love and femininity.

This interpretation instead places her at the centre of her own story.

That shift allows the production to explore the difference between the woman as she actually is and the idealised image constructed around her.

When Ideals No Longer Fit

The production asks what happens when traditional ideals begin to lose their meaning.

Its central question is whether impossible dreams and outdated models of perfection should still be defended in a world increasingly shaped by image, appearance and contradiction.

Through Dulcinea, the show examines those tensions with a mixture of humour and emotion.

An Evening of Theatre and Music in Ibiza

Paloma San Basilio's appearance adds a major name from Spanish musical theatre to Can Ventosa's cultural programme.

For Ibiza audiences, Dulcinea offers an opportunity to see an established performer take on a classic literary figure while presenting the character through a distinctly contemporary lens.

Dulcinea, starring Paloma San Basilio, will be performed at Can Ventosa in Ibiza Town on September 20 at 8pm, bringing Cervantes' iconic character back to the stage with a new voice and a very different perspective.
