There are Ibiza clubs that became famous for their music.

There are others that became famous for their size, their DJs or their parties.

And then there is Es Paradis.

With its white architecture, gardens, columns and famous pyramid roof, Es Paradis has always looked different from the rest. But behind the spectacular design is an even more interesting story: a club that opened in 1975, survived the transformation of Ibiza's nightlife and became one of the defining landmarks of San Antonio.

In 2025, Es Paradis celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking half a century at the centre of Ibiza's nightlife.

Es Paradis opened in 1975

Es Paradis opened in San Antonio in 1975, during an important period in Ibiza's transformation into an international holiday and nightlife destination.

The club was created by businessman José Manuel Aguirre, better known as Pepe Aguirre, together with artist and designer Lluís Güell. Güell played an important role in creating the distinctive visual character of the venue.

At the time, Ibiza's nightlife looked very different from the superclub culture that would eventually make the island famous.

Es Paradis was conceived as an open-air venue, surrounded by greenery and designed to feel more like an exotic garden than a conventional nightclub.

That design would become one of its greatest advantages.

A nightclub under the Ibiza sky

For its first years, Es Paradis was completely open to the sky.

This was a very different experience from entering a conventional enclosed nightclub. The architecture, vegetation and Mediterranean night air were all part of the atmosphere.

The club's official history describes the original design as a space of gardens, white columns and vegetation, deliberately creating a dreamlike environment.

For Ibiza in the 1970s, this fitted naturally into the island's emerging nightlife culture.

The boundaries between the indoors and outdoors were less important. Music, architecture, nature and social life could all exist together.

Es Paradis became part of that early generation of venues that helped establish San Antonio as one of the island's major nightlife centres.

The club that locals went to in summer

Es Paradis was not only a destination for international visitors.

Its importance to the local nightlife scene is particularly interesting.

In a 2016 interview with Periódico de Ibiza, Ibiza resident and author Juan Pérez Escribano recalled that locals would go to Es Paradis in summer and Pacha in winter. The same article includes historical photographs from the club's opening period and recalls how large the venue already was in its early years.

That gives us an idea of how deeply Es Paradis was embedded in Ibiza's social life.

Before Ibiza became the global clubbing destination it is today, its major clubs were also important meeting places for people living on the island.

Why Es Paradis had to change

For years, the club operated as an open-air venue.

But eventually, Ibiza's nightlife regulations changed the physical design of Es Paradis.

In 1990, tighter noise regulations meant that the club could no longer continue operating in exactly the same open-air format. The venue was enclosed and a remarkable new architectural feature appeared: the retractable pyramid roof.

It could have been the end of the original Es Paradis concept.

Instead, the change created one of the most recognisable club interiors in Ibiza.

The pyramid became part of the identity of the venue and transformed what had once been an open-air nightclub into a spectacular enclosed space.

Sometimes Ibiza's most famous architectural features are the result of the island changing around its clubs.

The pyramid becomes an Ibiza landmark

Today, the pyramid roof is almost inseparable from the Es Paradis name.

The structure helped give the club a completely different visual identity from many of Ibiza's other major venues.

Inside, the white architecture and vegetation continued the original idea of creating a kind of fantasy garden.

This visual identity is also why Es Paradis has long carried the popular nickname of "the most beautiful club in the world." The club itself uses that description prominently in its current branding.

It is worth treating the phrase as a nickname rather than an objective title, but there is little doubt that the venue has one of the most distinctive designs in Ibiza.

The Water Party changes everything

If the pyramid is Es Paradis's most recognisable architectural feature, the Water Party is its most famous party concept.

The idea is simple and slightly ridiculous in exactly the way a great Ibiza party should be.

At the right moment, water is released onto the dance floor and the club effectively becomes a giant indoor pool.

The Fiesta del Agua became one of Es Paradis's signature events and remains central to the club's identity decades after it first became famous. The venue continues to describe the Water Party as one of its legendary experiences.

It is also a perfect example of how Ibiza's most successful parties often go beyond music.

The Water Party is not simply a night with a particular DJ lineup.

It is an experience people remember.

Es Paradis and San Antonio

Es Paradis also tells the story of San Antonio itself.

For decades, San Antonio has been one of Ibiza's major nightlife centres, particularly for visitors arriving from Britain and other European markets.

Es Paradis helped anchor that scene.

Its location in the centre of San Antonio placed it close to the harbour, the West End and the famous sunset bars of the bay.

And its neighbour is another major piece of Ibiza history: Eden.

The two clubs sit extremely close to one another, creating an unusual concentration of nightlife in a relatively small part of San Antonio. Ibiza Spotlight has described the relationship between the two venues as a kind of friendly rivalry.

Together, they became important parts of San Antonio's transformation into one of Ibiza's best-known party destinations.

A different kind of Ibiza club

Es Paradis has never been defined by a single DJ in the way some of Ibiza's other legendary clubs have.

Its identity has always been more visual and experiential.

That distinction matters.

Pacha became associated with its distinctive style and international reputation.

Amnesia became central to the development of Ibiza's Balearic and electronic sound.

Space became synonymous with daytime clubbing and marathon sessions.

Es Paradis built something different.

It created a world.

The gardens, white architecture, pyramid roof and Water Party all became parts of an experience that could be recognised even without knowing which DJ was playing.

Five decades of change

The Ibiza of 1975 barely resembles the Ibiza of today.

When Es Paradis opened, the island had not yet developed the enormous international club industry that would eventually dominate its summers.

Over the following decades, electronic music became increasingly important. International DJs became global stars. Ibiza's clubs grew larger and more sophisticated, and San Antonio developed into one of Europe's most famous nightlife destinations.

Es Paradis survived every one of those changes.

The venue has continually adapted its music and events to new generations while maintaining its distinctive visual identity. Its current programme includes themed parties and different musical styles, demonstrating that the club continues to evolve rather than simply live on its past reputation.

50 years of Es Paradis

In 2025, Es Paradis celebrated 50 years since opening.

The anniversary was not simply about looking backwards. The club marked the occasion with events bringing together different generations of clubbers, artists and people connected to the venue.

That is perhaps the most impressive part of the Es Paradis story.

A nightclub surviving for five decades is unusual anywhere.

Doing it on an island whose nightlife changes almost every summer is something else entirely.

Why Es Paradis still matters

Es Paradis is sometimes overshadowed in conversations about Ibiza's clubbing history by larger or more internationally famous names.

But its importance is difficult to ignore.

It opened in 1975.

It belonged to the first generation of major Ibiza nightclubs.

It helped establish San Antonio as a nightlife destination.

It survived the transition from open-air club to enclosed venue.

It turned its architecture into part of its identity.

And it created the Water Party, one of the most recognisable themed events in Ibiza.

Most importantly, Es Paradis has remained recognisably Es Paradis through all of those changes.

That may be its greatest achievement.

Because Ibiza clubbing is constantly reinventing itself, but some places become part of the island's permanent landscape.

Es Paradis is one of them.

For 50 years, beneath gardens, lights and that unmistakable pyramid, generations of people have come to San Antonio to dance.

And the story is still being written.
