Sant Josep Celebrates 20 Years of Its Historic Church Organ with Concert Series Running Until May 2027

November 02, 2026

The church of Sant Josep de sa Talaia is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its historic organ with a special programme of classical music, choral performances and an international masterclass running from October 2026 until May 2027.

Organised by Sant Josep Town Council in collaboration with the Diocese of Ibiza and the Parish of Sant Josep, the programme, titled 20 anys de l’orgue de Sant Josep, brings together six concerts and an international educational event dedicated to organ music.

The anniversary also celebrates an important part of Ibiza's musical heritage, with an instrument that has become a distinctive feature of the church and its cultural life.

A Unique Organ with Almost 1,000 Pipes

The organ was blessed on 3 September 2006 and inaugurated with a concert by the Escolania de Montserrat.

Built by Mallorcan master organ builder Pere Reynés i Florit, the instrument features mechanical transmission, 20 stops and almost 1,000 pipes.

Its sound draws inspiration from the Baroque organ tradition, while one of its registers evokes the distinctive sound of the traditional Ibizan flute.

Over the past two decades, the instrument has hosted numerous performances through the church's regular Autumn Concert Series, welcoming soloists, organists and choral groups.

The 2026-2027 anniversary programme extends this established musical tradition with a broader selection of performances and educational activities.

Full Programme: Concerts from November 2026 to May 2027

The anniversary celebrations feature six concerts, beginning with a performance by young Barcelona musician Joan Esteban Sandoval Díaz.

1 November 2026, 12:00: Els teclats virtuosos: La passió dels 15 anys

The opening concert features Joan Esteban Sandoval Díaz performing on organ and PocketPiano. Originally scheduled for 31 October, the performance was postponed to 1 November because of the national mourning period.

19 December 2026, 20:30: Junts per Nadal

Organist Rafel Riera joins several local choirs for a Christmas concert under the direction of Jordi Martí. Participating groups include Cor de Sant Josep, Petit Cor, Cor del Club de Sant Jordi and Cor des Cubells.

23 January 2027, 20:30: Maurice Duruflé, Works for Organ and His Requiem

La Cantúria Cor de Cambra from Mallorca performs works by Maurice Duruflé, including his Requiem, with Rafel Riera accompanying on the organ. The choir is directed by Ricard Terradas.

13 February 2027, 20:30: De la creu a la llum. Recital poeticocoral

The Ibizan choir Petit Cor, directed by Jordi Martí, performs alongside organist María José Perete in a programme combining choral music and poetry.

2 May 2027, 19:00: International Masterclass Final Concert

Participants in the international organ masterclass will perform alongside their instructor, French organist Thomas Ospital, presenting the results of the educational programme.

6 May 2027, 20:30: Les veus del cel

The anniversary programme concludes with a performance by the Escolania de Montserrat, the same choir that inaugurated the organ in September 2006.

International Organ Masterclass with Thomas Ospital

One of the programme's highlights is an international organ masterclass taking place from 30 April to 2 May 2027.

Led by Paris-based organist Thomas Ospital, the course is free to attend for selected participants and offers an opportunity to study with an internationally recognised musician.

Registration is available through the dedicated programme website, orgue.santjosep.org.

The masterclass will conclude with the public concert on 2 May, featuring the participating students and Thomas Ospital.

Free Concerts at Sant Josep Church

Most performances in the anniversary programme offer free admission until capacity is reached.

The closing concert by the Escolania de Montserrat on 6 May 2027 requires a free invitation, which can be collected from the Parish of Sant Josep from 3 April 2027, after Mass.

All concerts take place at the Church of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, located at Carrer de Pere Escanellas, 26, in the village of Sant Josep.

The anniversary programme offers an opportunity to experience a distinctive part of Ibiza's cultural heritage while celebrating two decades of music, craftsmanship and community life around one of the island's most recognisable church instruments.
