A man wanted in connection with several suspected burglaries in Ibiza was arrested after a dramatic escape attempt that took him from a residential property, across balconies and down a coastal cliff before ending in the sea.

The incident took place on Tuesday, when officers from the Policía Nacional's UDEV surprised the suspect inside a home in Ibiza.

According to information provided by the police, the man attempted to escape by climbing between balconies before reaching the street and continuing his flight towards the coast.

Escape Across Balconies

The suspect reportedly used the same type of climbing technique that investigators say had been used in several previous burglaries.

After leaving the property, he moved across balconies and then continued running through the area before descending a cliff towards the sea.

The unusual escape prompted officers to maintain visual contact with him throughout the pursuit.

He Swam Around 150 Metres Offshore

Once he reached the water, the man continued trying to avoid arrest.

He swam approximately 150 metres away from the coast while officers repeatedly instructed him to return to land.

Concerned about his safety, the police requested assistance from a maritime rescue unit.

One of the officers even removed part of his uniform and entered the water in an attempt to persuade the suspect to stop.

The man refused and continued swimming.

Attempt to Reach a Sailboat

During the escape, the suspect also approached a sailing boat that was anchored offshore.

He apparently intended to use the vessel as another means of escape, but abandoned the attempt after noticing that people were on board.

The pursuit then continued in the water.

Rescued Near Figueretas

Police eventually went to the lifeguard station at Ses Figueretes to request assistance.

Lifeguards deployed a rescue dinghy, allowing police officers and rescue personnel to reach the suspect.

He was brought safely back to shore and was found to be in apparently good health.

He was then arrested and informed of the reasons for his detention and his legal rights.

Wanted Over Other Burglaries

Once his identity was established, officers confirmed that the man was already the subject of an active police search issued by the UDEV in Ibiza.

Investigators were looking for him in connection with three other suspected burglaries in homes and an alleged unlawful entry into a residence.

Police say the three burglaries followed a similar modus operandi, with the suspect allegedly gaining access by climbing up buildings and entering properties through balconies or other elevated points.

The items reportedly targeted included jewellery and cash.

Four Suspected Burglaries

Following the latest incident, police attribute four burglary offences to the man, one of them allegedly attempted.

He is also being investigated for unlawful entry into a home and serious resistance and disobedience towards authorities.

These remain allegations and the judicial process will determine his eventual responsibility.

A Coordinated Police and Rescue Operation

The arrest required cooperation between the Policía Nacional and the lifeguard service at Ses Figueretes.

What began as an attempted escape from a residential property quickly developed into a land and sea pursuit.

Maintaining visual contact with the suspect was crucial as he moved away from the coast, while the rescue operation was necessary to bring him safely back to shore.

A Dramatic End to the Pursuit

The incident has highlighted an unusual escape route in Ibiza, involving balconies, a cliff and around 150 metres of open water.

The suspect ultimately failed to escape and was taken into custody after rescue personnel reached him offshore.

Investigators will now continue with the proceedings relating to the alleged burglaries and other offences attributed to him.

For the Policía Nacional, the operation brought an end to a search for a suspect believed to have been involved in a series of residential burglaries on the island.
