Dalt Vila will take on a different atmosphere this weekend as Ibiza joins Spain's UNESCO World Heritage cities for the 2026 edition of Las Noches del Patrimonio, offering two days of free cultural activities inside the historic walled city.

On Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, residents and visitors will be able to explore Dalt Vila through guided and theatrical tours, live music, museum activities, extended opening hours and contemporary dance.

The Ibiza programme includes 15 free activities and forms part of the ninth edition of the nationwide cultural celebration, which brings together Spain's 15 cities recognised as World Heritage sites. The 2026 edition has expanded the event into two dates in most participating cities, creating additional opportunities to experience historic centres after dark.

Two Nights of Culture Inside Dalt Vila

The programme in Ibiza is organised around three strands: Abierto Patrimonio, Vive Patrimonio and Escena Patrimonio.

Abierto Patrimonio focuses on opening historic and cultural spaces beyond their normal hours. Vive Patrimonio brings music, theatre and other live performances into historic locations, while Escena Patrimonio is dedicated to contemporary artistic creation in heritage settings.

Together, the three strands will transform parts of Dalt Vila into a series of cultural spaces rather than simply places to visit.

Several museums and historic buildings will remain open into the evening, allowing visitors to combine exhibitions with performances and guided activities throughout the two days.

BENTHOS Brings Posidonia to the Stage

One of the highlights of the Ibiza programme will be the premiere of BENTHOS, a contemporary dance work by choreographer, dancer and researcher Adrián Herrera.

The performance will take place on Saturday, September 12, in the Claustre del Ayuntamiento in Dalt Vila, with two performances scheduled for 9pm and 10pm.

Each performance will last approximately 20 minutes.

BENTHOS takes Posidonia oceanica as its starting point, using contemporary dance to explore ideas of interdependence, fragility and regeneration within marine ecosystems.

The work connects Ibiza's natural heritage with contemporary artistic creation, reflecting the importance of Posidonia to the Mediterranean environment and to the identity of the island.

Admission will be free until capacity is reached.

A Glimpse of Renaissance Ibiza

The programme will also offer visitors the opportunity to step back into Ibiza's past through two theatrical tours of Dalt Vila.

The performances will recreate aspects of life inside the walled city during the Renaissance period, providing a more immersive way of exploring Ibiza's historic centre.

The first tour will take place on Friday, September 11, at 6pm, while the second will be held on Saturday, September 12, at 11am.

Both tours begin at the Mercat Vell and do not require advance registration.

Discover the Walls After Dark

Another special activity will focus specifically on the defensive walls surrounding Dalt Vila.

The tour Una noche en las murallas de Dalt Vila will recreate the atmosphere of the fortified city after nightfall, including the role of historic surveillance and protection systems.

The experience begins from Portal Nou at 7:30pm on the scheduled evenings.

Advance booking is required for this activity.

The tour offers a different perspective on the fortifications, moving beyond their architectural importance to explore how the city functioned once darkness fell.

Historic Letters and Ibiza's Past

The Arxiu Històric d'Eivissa i Formentera will also participate with special visits at 8pm on both Friday and Saturday.

This year's programme will include the opportunity to see at least nine royal letters associated with Alfonso V of Aragon, also known as Alfonso V the Magnanimous.

The documents provide a direct connection to the political and historical world surrounding medieval Ibiza and offer visitors an opportunity to encounter original historical material inside the city's heritage complex.

The archive is located at Can Botino, within Dalt Vila.

Special Visits at the Museu Puget and MACE

The cultural programme extends into Ibiza's museums, with special approaches to two temporary exhibitions.

On Friday at 9pm, the Museu Puget will host a commented visit to I en la mar, els somnis by Hans Grass.

On Saturday at 9pm, the Museu d'Art Contemporani d'Eivissa, MACE, will offer a special visit to Cel d'Or by Stefan Brüggemann.

Rather than conventional guided tours, the museum visits are intended to be slower and more reflective experiences, encouraging visitors to approach the works through perception, sensitivity and personal interpretation.

Music in Some of Dalt Vila's Most Atmospheric Spaces

Live music will form another important part of the programme.

The Friday evening schedule begins at 7pm with a performance by Santi Pérez and Anikó Pusztai in Es Refectori.

At 8:30pm, the Ensemble de Saxos will perform at the Mirador de la plaza d'Espanya, providing an opportunity to hear live music against the backdrop of Ibiza's historic fortifications and city views.

The evening concludes at 10pm with a jazz quartet performing in the Claustre del Ayuntamiento.

The selection of historic venues is intended to make the architecture itself part of the experience, placing music within spaces that normally serve a different purpose.

Six Heritage Spaces Open Until 11pm

One of the simplest ways to experience the event will be to explore Dalt Vila's cultural spaces during their extended evening opening hours.

Six locations will offer free access with special schedules.

The MACE and Museu Puget will both remain open until 11pm on Friday and Saturday, with daytime and evening sessions.

The Centre d'Interpretació Madina Yabisa will also open until 11pm, as will the Arxiu Històric d'Eivissa i Formentera at Can Botino and the Sala Refectori of Ibiza Town Hall.

Es Polvorí will additionally open during evening hours and on Saturday morning.

The extended schedule makes it possible to visit several spaces after the heat of the daytime has eased and to experience parts of Dalt Vila in a markedly different atmosphere.

Dalt Vila as a Living Heritage Site

The idea behind Las Noches del Patrimonio is to present historic centres not simply as monuments to look at, but as places where contemporary cultural life can take place.

That approach is particularly relevant to Dalt Vila, whose Renaissance walls and historic buildings form part of Ibiza's World Heritage designation.

The weekend programme combines archaeology, history, architecture and original documents with music, theatre and contemporary dance.

Ibiza's programme is taking place alongside activities in the other 14 Spanish cities included in the World Heritage Cities network.

The 2026 edition brings together hundreds of free cultural activities across cities including Alcalá de Henares, Ávila, Baeza, Cáceres, Córdoba, Cuenca, Mérida, Salamanca, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia, Tarragona, Toledo and Úbeda.

Together, the cities are using their historic centres as settings for exhibitions, performances, workshops and heritage experiences.

The official programme describes the 2026 edition as the beginning of a new stage for the initiative, with a greater emphasis on connecting citizens, heritage and contemporary creativity.

An Alternative Side of Ibiza for September

For Ibiza, the event offers something noticeably different from the island's better-known September nightlife programme.

Instead of clubs and beach venues, the focus is on the history, architecture, museums and cultural identity of the island's capital.

The timing also gives visitors an opportunity to discover Dalt Vila later in the evening, when the atmosphere inside the walls changes and the historic setting becomes part of the cultural experience.

Las Noches del Patrimonio will turn Dalt Vila into a cultural stage on September 11 and 12, combining historic spaces with performances, exhibitions and guided experiences.
