Three people have been arrested in Ibiza after authorities intercepted a powerful recreational boat carrying 22 migrants in an irregular situation towards Formentera.

The vessel had allegedly been stolen days earlier in the Talamanca area of Ibiza and was fitted with a 250-horsepower engine. The Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional say their investigation identified three men who allegedly took turns acting as skippers during the crossing.

The boat was intercepted in waters close to Formentera before it reached the island's coastline. Salvamento Marítimo was called in to assist with the operation and the people aboard were brought safely ashore.

Two of the three arrested men were subsequently remanded in provisional custody by a judge.

Boat Intercepted Before Reaching Formentera

The operation began when the Guardia Civil detected the recreational boat as it approached Formentera.

Officers intercepted the vessel before it could reach the coast, where 22 migrants were found aboard.

Given the circumstances, Salvamento Marítimo provided assistance during the operation.

The boat was not a traditional fishing vessel or a small improvised craft. Investigators identified it as a recreational speedboat equipped with a 250-horsepower engine, a type of vessel authorities say is increasingly being used because of its ability to cover the distance between North Africa and the Balearic Islands more quickly.

Suspected Main Skipper Jumped Into the Sea

The operation took an unexpected turn when the alleged main skipper reportedly jumped into the sea as the vessel approached the Formentera coast.

According to investigators, the man was attempting to avoid arrest.

He was not able to evade the authorities for long. Hours later, Guardia Civil officers located and identified him on Formentera, where he was initially arrested on suspicion of resisting an authority officer.

The Policía Nacional's Immigration and Border Brigade subsequently linked him to the intercepted boat and arrested him again in connection with the alleged role as skipper.

He Had Already Been Arrested in April

Investigators also found that the man had allegedly been involved in another similar operation earlier in 2026.

He had been arrested in April in a joint operation involving the Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional in which he was allegedly acting as skipper of another migrant boat.

His alleged previous involvement has now become part of the current investigation, although the charges remain subject to the judicial process.

Investigators Say the Boat Had Been Stolen in Talamanca

Technical checks carried out during the investigation established that the recreational boat had allegedly been stolen days before in Talamanca, Ibiza.

The discovery added a further suspected offence to the investigation.

Authorities say the boat was then used in the crossing that carried the 22 migrants towards the Pitiusas.

The investigation has not publicly established all of the circumstances surrounding when or how the vessel was taken, but the Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional say they were able to verify its stolen status through technical checks.

Two Other Men Allegedly Acted as Skippers

The investigation did not stop with the man who allegedly jumped into the sea.

Police investigators identified two additional men who they believe also acted as skippers of the recreational boat during the journey.

That brought the total number of people arrested in connection with the alleged operation to three.

All three were placed at the disposal of the courts and face allegations relating to the organisation and execution of the crossing.

Charges Include Human Trafficking-Related Offences

The three suspects are being investigated for alleged offences including trafficking in human beings, offences against the rights of foreign citizens, facilitating irregular immigration and the unlawful use of the stolen vessel.

One of the suspects also faces an allegation of resistance to authority.

These are allegations under investigation and the arrests do not constitute a finding of guilt. Any criminal responsibility will ultimately have to be determined through the judicial process.

Two of the three suspects were ordered into provisional custody, while the judicial measures concerning the case remain part of the ongoing proceedings.
