Ibiza at the Centre of International Investigation into Alleged Drug Money Laundering Through Luxury Villas
Ibiza has emerged as a major focus of an international investigation into an alleged criminal network accused of laundering money from cocaine trafficking through luxury property developments in Spain and abroad. Spanish authorities say the organisation used real estate companies to channel suspected criminal proceeds into high-end villas and residential developments, including projects on Ibiza, in Marbella and in Madrid.
The operation, coordinated by Europol and involving Spain's National Police and Guardia Civil, resulted in 27 arrests across Spain and the Dominican Republic. Four people were arrested on Ibiza, where eight of the 38 searches carried out during the operation took place.
The investigation remains ongoing, with the Audiencia Nacional and the Special Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office directing the case.
Spanish Suspect Arrested in the Dominican Republic
Jonathan Yera Pozo, a 41-year-old Spanish national from Almería, was arrested in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Spanish authorities identify him as the alleged leader of the network, which is suspected of combining international cocaine trafficking with a system for laundering money through luxury property investments.
According to reporting published on 11 October, Yera was awaiting the legal procedures relating to his extradition to Spain.
The operation, known as Amarelo-Zielo in Spain and Fast Lap by Dominican authorities, involved cooperation between Spanish and Dominican law enforcement agencies, the US Drug Enforcement Administration and Europol.
Investigators say the organisation imported cocaine into Europe from Colombia and Panama, using maritime containers and methods designed to conceal illicit shipments.
The wider investigation has linked the network to four cocaine seizures in Panama involving more than 1,500 kilograms of the drug.
Luxury Property Developments on Ibiza
The investigation identified property companies and corporate structures allegedly used to channel funds into luxury residential developments. Authorities say the network invested in entire residential developments and high-end villas, particularly on Ibiza, in Marbella and in Madrid.
The alleged purpose was to conceal the origin of the money and obscure the ownership of the properties. Investigators also suspect the network offered money-laundering services to other criminal organisations in exchange for commissions.
On Ibiza, eight searches were conducted during the operation, and four people were arrested. The island accounted for the second-highest number of searches in Spain after Madrid, where 19 took place.
Local reporting has identified several Ibiza companies associated with property developments in Jesús and Cas Mut, in the municipality of Sant Josep. These include Ses Torres 3 Unero SL and Cas Mut Unero SL, which were established for specific development projects.
However, the available information does not establish a definitive connection between every company identified in local reporting and the alleged leader's business network. The proceedings remain under judicial secrecy, limiting the information publicly available about individual transactions and corporate relationships.
How the Alleged Money-Laundering System Worked
According to investigators, the network used companies created for individual property projects to introduce suspected criminal proceeds into the legitimate financial system.
Authorities allege that these companies received substantial sums presented as shareholder loans, capital contributions or investment funds. The money was then used to acquire land and finance the construction of luxury homes.
The investigation also points to the alleged use of intermediary companies and international business transactions to make the origin of the funds harder to trace.
Once properties were sold to buyers, the proceeds could appear to originate from legitimate real estate transactions. Investigators suspect that the network also used its corporate structure to provide similar services to other criminal organisations.
These are allegations forming part of an ongoing investigation, rather than findings established by a final court judgment.
Four Arrests on Ibiza and an Important Unresolved Connection
One of the four people arrested on Ibiza was José Luis Cortés Cortés, the husband of former Ibiza Town Council councillor Ana Ferrer, who resigned after his arrest became public.
Cortés remains in provisional detention, according to the reporting published on 11 October. His lawyer told La Voz de Ibiza that he is provisionally accused of money laundering and membership of a criminal organisation, rather than drug trafficking. His defence has appealed the detention decision.
A key point remains unresolved: the available reporting states that investigators have not publicly established the relationship between Cortés and Yera, or between Yera's real estate company and the Ibiza companies associated with Cortés.
Ferrer is not identified as an investigated person in the reporting reviewed. Her resignation from the council followed her husband's arrest.
Assets Seized and Investigation Continues
The Spanish Ministry of the Interior reported that the operation resulted in the seizure of vehicles, boats, firearms and cash, as well as the blocking of cryptocurrency assets valued at more than 1.3 million USDT.
Authorities also ordered restrictions affecting properties and other assets linked to the people under investigation. The operation included 38 searches across Spain and the Dominican Republic.
Five international arrest warrants have been processed, and authorities have stated that further investigative measures and arrests remain possible.
The case is being directed by the Audiencia Nacional and the Special Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office. With the investigation still open, the full extent of the alleged network's property investments on Ibiza, and the precise relationships between the companies involved, remain to be established in the judicial proceedings.
