Ibiza has closed the latest episode of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds with 13 incidents recorded by the emergency services and no reported injuries.

The wider weather episode affected the Balearic Islands from Wednesday through Friday, with 70 incidents registered by the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre across the archipelago during the 48 hours from 13:00 on Wednesday to 13:00 on Friday.

Mallorca accounted for 54 incidents, Ibiza 13, Formentera two and Menorca one. The Balearic Government said none of the incidents were serious.

Ibiza recorded 13 incidents

The official emergency balance shows that seven of Ibiza's 13 incidents occurred in the municipality of Ibiza, while three were recorded in Sant Antoni.

The remaining incidents were distributed elsewhere on the island.

Across the Balearics, the most frequent problems included fallen trees, obstacles or liquids on roads, flooding in public areas and buildings, interruptions to basic services and damage to urban elements.

No injuries were reported

Despite the weather warnings and the disruption caused by the storms, the official emergency balance reported no serious incidents or personal injuries during the episode.

Some incidents required significant emergency intervention, particularly in Mallorca.

In Felanitx, firefighters rescued a woman who became trapped in her vehicle after water entered it. Several other vehicles also required assistance after becoming stuck in an area affected by accumulated water.

Those incidents were resolved without personal injuries.

The Pitiusas faced their most concerning period on Thursday

The most significant period for Ibiza and Formentera came around midday on Thursday, when a front carrying substantial electrical activity, rain and wind approached the Pitiusas.

The situation prompted the emergency authorities to send a preventive ES-Alert to mobile phones across Ibiza and Formentera.

In coordination with the education authorities, the collection of students from schools on both islands was also brought forward as a precaution.

The alert was therefore a preventive response to the forecast conditions at the time, rather than an indication that a major disaster had already occurred.

The storm did not produce the feared level of damage

Although the weather system prompted significant concern, its eventual impact on Ibiza was more limited than the most serious scenarios suggested by the forecasts.

The official emergency service recorded 13 incidents on Ibiza during the episode, but none were classified as serious.

This is important because the presence of an orange weather warning does not mean that severe impacts will necessarily occur in every location covered by the warning.

Rainfall was significant in the Pitiusas

The Balearic Government said important accumulated rainfall totals were recorded in the Pitiusas and Mallorca, particularly during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

Rain also continued in isolated areas during Thursday.

The official account highlighted Felanitx in Mallorca, where around 60 litres per square metre accumulated over several hours during Thursday afternoon.

AEMET's Ibiza Airport observations show that measurable rainfall was recorded during the earlier part of the episode, while conditions at the airport had become dry by Friday evening.

A small forest fire may have been caused by lightning

The emergency service also recorded a small forest fire during Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said it was probably caused by a lightning strike.

The wording is important: the cause was described as probable rather than definitively established.

Alert levels were reduced

By Friday, the Directorate General of Emergencies had reduced the protection alert from orange to yellow for Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

The Government said the episode was entering its final stage with lower intensity and expected the remaining alert to be deactivated later in the day.

The reduction followed the latest forecasts from AEMET, which indicated that the most intense phase of the episode was ending.

Ibiza's ES-Alert was precautionary

The decision to send the ES-Alert to Ibiza and Formentera on Thursday has attracted attention because the islands ultimately avoided the most serious impacts.

However, the official explanation makes clear that the alert was based on the weather situation and forecasts available at the time.

Authorities were dealing with a front approaching the Pitiusas with significant electrical activity, rainfall and wind.

The alert was therefore a precautionary emergency-management measure rather than a prediction that severe damage was certain to occur.

The episode now comes to an end

For Ibiza, the final official balance is relatively limited compared with the potential severity indicated by the warnings.

Thirteen incidents were recorded on the island, with no reported injuries or serious incidents.

Across the Balearics, 70 incidents were handled by the emergency coordination system, most of them in Mallorca.

The authorities have now begun lowering the alert levels as the weather system moves away and conditions improve.

For residents and visitors, the episode serves as another reminder that Mediterranean storms can produce highly localised impacts. A warning can cover a large area even when the eventual damage varies considerably from one municipality to another.
