Ibiza's fig season is proving particularly abundant this year, with local market traders reporting large quantities of fruit and a notably sweet flavour.

The 2026 campaign also arrived earlier than usual. At one Ibiza market stall, the first figs were already appearing around the end of July, approximately 10 days ahead of the normal timing.

The combination of a rainy winter and a hot summer is being credited by local producers with helping the fruit develop earlier and in good quantities.

A particularly good year for figs

María José Roig Planells, manager of Fruites i Verdures Es Caramull at Mercat Nou in Ibiza, describes this year's harvest as plentiful.

According to her, there are still large quantities available and the fruit has been especially sweet and intense in flavour.

During the newspaper's visit to the market, trays of figs reportedly sold out within minutes, illustrating the current demand for the seasonal fruit.

The season arrived early

The 2026 fig campaign started around 10 days earlier than usual.

The first examples were already available at the end of July, with the earlier arrival attributed locally to the combination of significant winter rainfall and high summer temperatures.

The main fresh-fig season falls toward late summer and early autumn, making September an important period for the island's harvest.

Several varieties grow on Ibiza

Ibiza is home to numerous fig varieties, with differences in colour, texture, size and sweetness.

At the Mercat Nou stall, three varieties were being sold during the current season:

• Oriola

• Julia

• Aubacó, described as the darker variety

The island's traditional fig culture includes many other local varieties, reflecting the long agricultural history of the Pitiusan countryside.

Green and dark figs

Not every Ibiza fig looks the same.

Depending on the variety, the fruit can range from green to dark shades, while the texture and sweetness can also vary.

The Julia variety, for example, is traditionally associated with greenish fruit, while Oriola is among the varieties traditionally valued on Ibiza for fresh consumption.

Winter rain and summer heat

According to the local market trader interviewed for the report, the relatively wet winter followed by a hot summer helped this year's crop arrive earlier and in significant quantities.

Heat encourages fruit development, although excessive rainfall at certain stages can have the opposite effect and damage the crop.

The 2026 combination appears to have been favourable for the growers supplying the market discussed in the report.

Birds are one of the main challenges

The harvest also faces a familiar problem: birds.

Figs are highly attractive to birds, which can damage fruit before it reaches the market.

Growers use different methods to protect the trees, including nets and large bird-shaped kites designed to discourage birds from approaching.

According to the market trader, however, netting remains the most effective method.

How long will the season last?

There should still be time to enjoy fresh Ibiza figs.

The current estimate from the market trader is that the fruit could continue arriving through the end of September and into early October.

If weather conditions remain favourable, the season could potentially extend toward the middle of October.

These are seasonal estimates rather than a fixed harvest deadline, so availability will depend on individual trees, varieties and weather conditions.

How much do Ibiza figs cost?

At the Mercat Nou stall featured in the report, a tray weighing approximately 800 grams was selling for €7.50.

The trader said the price was broadly unchanged from the previous year.

This should be treated as a current example from one market stall rather than a fixed Ibiza-wide price, as prices can vary according to variety, seller, quality and availability.

A simple way to eat them

For María José Roig Planells, there is no need for a complicated recipe.

Her preferred combination is traditional and simple: pa pagès with olive oil and salt, fresh fig and a piece of cheese.

It is a good example of how seasonal produce has long been enjoyed in Ibiza, with the fruit providing sweetness alongside savoury local ingredients.

Figs and Ibiza's rural landscape

The fig tree is one of the characteristic trees of the rural Pitiusan landscape, alongside species such as the almond and carob.

Traditional Ibiza agriculture developed many uses for the fig, including eating the fruit fresh and preserving it by drying.

Historical descriptions of Pitiusan agriculture also document numerous varieties and different uses for the fruit.

More than a summer fruit

Fresh figs have a relatively short season, which is one reason they remain closely associated with late summer and early autumn.
