British Tourist Faces Up to Two Years in Prison After Reckless Driving Incident in Ibiza

A 38-year-old British man has been arrested in Ibiza on suspicion of reckless driving after allegedly fleeing a Guardia Civil checkpoint and continuing to drive dangerously towards Santa Eulària.

The incident took place at around 6:30am on September 4, when traffic officers were carrying out an alcohol and drug control on the road between Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni de Portmany, close to nightlife venues.

According to the Guardia Civil, the driver ignored officers’ signals to stop and fled at high speed, putting the officers at serious risk.

He was later located at a hotel in Santa Eulària and arrested.

Driver Fled a Guardia Civil Checkpoint

The incident began during an early-morning traffic control designed to check drivers for alcohol and drugs.

Officers from the Ibiza Traffic Detachment attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly ignored their instructions and accelerated away.

The Guardia Civil said the escape placed the officers at serious risk and immediately triggered an investigation to identify and locate the driver.

The incident occurred on the road connecting Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni, one of the island’s main routes through areas with a high concentration of nightlife activity.

Investigators Later Found More Evidence on Social Media

The investigation did not end with the initial escape.

After the driver had been located and arrested, investigators obtained access to several videos circulating on social media.

The footage showed the same vehicle carrying out what the Guardia Civil described as extremely dangerous manoeuvres after the initial escape.

According to the authorities, the driving placed other road users at continuing risk during the journey towards Santa Eulària.

The social media footage therefore became an important part of the evidence gathered during the investigation.

Arrested at a Hotel in Santa Eulària

Following the attempted stop, officers began tracing the vehicle and its driver.

The suspect was eventually located at a hotel in Santa Eulària, where he was arrested.

The man has not been publicly named.

The case concerns an alleged offence against road safety involving reckless driving.

Up to Two Years in Prison

The potential consequences are significant.

As the suspected author of a reckless-driving offence, the British national could face a prison sentence of up to two years.

He could also lose his right to drive motor vehicles for between one and six years.

These are the maximum potential penalties associated with the alleged offence and do not mean that a court has already imposed a sentence.

Alcohol or Drug Use Was Not Established

The original traffic control was specifically checking drivers for alcohol and drugs.

However, the available reporting does not establish that the arrested driver was driving under the influence at the time of the incident.

By the time he was located and arrested, the opportunity to establish his condition at the moment of the alleged offence had passed.

The current case is therefore centred on the alleged reckless manner of driving and the danger created for officers and other road users.

The Case Comes During Increased Road-Safety Monitoring

The arrest comes amid increased attention to dangerous driving on Ibiza’s roads.

The Guardia Civil has been using both roadside controls and investigations based on videos circulating online to identify potentially dangerous behaviour.

In recent weeks, authorities have also reported several cases in the Balearic Islands in which dangerous driving was identified through footage shared on social media.

The approach reflects a broader effort to target behaviour that places other road users at risk, even when officers did not witness every manoeuvre themselves.

A Serious Road-Safety Warning

The Ibiza incident highlights the risks associated with dangerous driving on the island, particularly during the busy summer season when roads around nightlife areas can remain active through the early morning.

The Guardia Civil has reiterated its commitment to road safety and issued a zero-tolerance message towards conduct that endangers other people on the road.

For drivers and visitors in Ibiza, the case is also a reminder that dangerous behaviour caught on camera can later become evidence in a criminal investigation.

The Investigation Now Moves Forward

The 38-year-old British man now faces the legal process over the alleged reckless driving.

The case follows an early-morning escape from a traffic checkpoint, a subsequent investigation and the discovery of additional footage showing the vehicle being driven dangerously.

If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison and a driving ban of between one and six years.

For now, however, those remain possible penalties rather than a sentence already handed down.

The investigation serves as another warning that Ibiza’s roads are being closely monitored, both on the ground and online.
