Ibiza is facing a significant spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms today, with an orange weather warning in force and the Balearic Government warning that intense downpours could cause localised flooding, water accumulation and disruption on roads and in low-lying areas.

The warning comes as a new period of unstable weather moves across the Balearic Islands. AEMET has placed Ibiza and Formentera under an orange alert for rain and thunderstorms, with hourly rainfall potentially reaching 50 litres per square metre.

The warning is in force throughout Thursday, September 17, with further storm activity expected during the day.

Could Ibiza Flood Today?

The answer is that localised flooding is possible, but flooding across the whole island is not being forecast.

The Balearic Government has specifically warned that intense rainfall can lead to sudden water accumulation and localised flooding, particularly around torrential streams, low-lying areas, roads and places where rainwater collects.

That means some areas could experience significant water accumulation even if other parts of Ibiza receive much less rain.

The risk is also highly dependent on where the heaviest storm cells develop.

Up to 50 Litres in One Hour

The orange warning issued by AEMET allows for hourly rainfall totals of up to 50 litres per square metre in Ibiza and Formentera.

The Balearic Government says today's storms could be accompanied by strong winds, while the wider weather pattern is expected to change quickly as the storm fronts move across the islands.

Rainfall of this intensity can overwhelm drainage systems in a short period, particularly when large amounts of water fall in a concentrated area.

Two Storm Fronts Expected

According to the latest emergency assessment, two storm fronts are expected to affect the Balearics today.

The first arrived during the early hours, with its main area of activity initially expected over the maritime channel between Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca, although the intensity over the islands could vary depending on the movement of the system.

A second front is expected to reach Ibiza and Formentera from around midday, with the Balearic Government currently forecasting its main impact there between approximately 12pm and 3pm before moving towards Mallorca.

This timing could change as the storms develop, which is why emergency authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.

Authorities Warn Against Flood-Prone Areas

The official advice is particularly clear when it comes to flooding.

Residents and visitors are being told to avoid torrents, low-lying areas and locations where water can accumulate.

The Government is also advising people not to cross flooded roads or areas of standing water, either on foot or by vehicle, and not to park or stop in flood-prone locations, near bridges, fords or stream mouths.

The authorities also recommend avoiding unnecessary travel during the most severe conditions.

Rain Could Be Localised and Uneven

One of the most important points for Ibiza residents and visitors is that an island-wide orange warning does not mean every part of Ibiza will receive the same amount of rain.

Thunderstorms can produce highly concentrated rainfall, with one neighbourhood receiving a major downpour while another area sees much less.

The Balearic Government noted that a significant portion of the first predicted precipitation could initially occur over the sea, while the eventual impact on Ibiza and Formentera depends on the direction and evolution of the storm front.

This makes local conditions particularly difficult to predict several hours in advance.

Strong Weather After a Summer of Storms

The new warning comes after another period of severe weather affected the Pitiusas earlier this month.

Ibiza and Formentera were also placed under orange warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms on September 9, although the impact varied considerably depending on where the storm activity developed.

The latest alert therefore marks another significant interruption to the normally settled September weather pattern.

Santa Eulària Tourist Day Postponed

The weather warning is already affecting plans on the island.

Santa Eulària Town Hall has suspended all activities scheduled for Tourist Day on September 17 because of the orange AEMET warning. The programme has been moved to Thursday, September 24.

Sant Antoni has also postponed its Tourist Day activities because of the weather alert, moving the programme to September 22.

Further outdoor cancellations or changes could follow as organisers assess local conditions.

What the Orange Warning Actually Means

An orange warning indicates a significant weather hazard, but it is not a prediction that severe flooding will definitely occur.

The most serious impacts are likely to be highly localised, particularly beneath intense thunderstorm cells.

Anyone already on the road should never attempt to drive through water covering the roadway, as the depth and current can be difficult to judge.

People are also being asked to stay away from torrents, low-lying areas, bridges, fords and other locations vulnerable to sudden water accumulation.
