Ibiza Puts €440,000 Project Behind Sa Real School Out to Tender to Improve Pedestrian Access and Traffic

October 05, 2026

Ibiza Town Hall has put out to tender a €440,486.14 project to transform and urbanise the roadside area behind Sa Real school along the EI-10, creating a safer pedestrian connection while also reorganising parking and vehicle movements.

The area is currently an undeveloped roadside margin that has been used by vehicles for informal parking. The planned works will give the space a defined urban layout with an accessible pedestrian route, organised parking and improved connections with the surrounding road network.

A New Accessible Pedestrian Route

One of the main elements of the project is the creation of a continuous, accessible pedestrian itinerary connecting Avenida de Ignasi Wallis with the existing pedestrian crossing over the EI-10.

The aim is to provide a safer and more practical route for people walking to and from Sa Real school.

The current roadside area does not provide a properly defined pedestrian route close to the school's entrance, creating an accessibility and safety issue for students and other pedestrians using the area.

The project will therefore establish a dedicated pedestrian path as part of a broader redesign of the space.

Parking Will Also Be Organised

Despite descriptions of the project as creating a pedestrian area, the entire space will not become pedestrian-only.

The plans also provide for an organised parking area between Sa Real school and the EI-10. This will replace the current informal use of the roadside margin and give vehicles a defined area in which to park.

The intention is to improve both pedestrian safety and the organisation of traffic around the school.

New Connections to the EI-10

The project also includes two new vehicle movements.

A new incorporation lane will connect traffic to the EI-10, while a separate exit lane will allow vehicles to leave towards Avenida de Ignasi Wallis.

These changes are designed to organise vehicle movements at the junction and improve circulation around an area used heavily by students, families and local traffic.

Drainage, Lighting and Green Areas

The €440,486.14 project goes beyond resurfacing the existing roadside area.

The planned works include:

  • New pavement and urbanisation

  • Drainage infrastructure

  • Public lighting

  • Traffic and pedestrian signage

  • Urban furniture

  • Trees and landscaped areas

  • A new irrigation network

  • Replacement of affected services

The aim is to turn what is currently a residual roadside space into a properly integrated part of the city's urban and mobility network.

Part of the Wider EI-10 Improvement Plan

The Sa Real project forms part of Ibiza Town Hall's wider programme to improve the EI-10 and its connections with surrounding neighbourhoods.

Other works are already underway or have recently been completed, including a new direct connection between the EI-10 and Carrer de Vicent Serra i Orvay and the recently completed access to Carrer de Josep Riquer Llobet.

Those interventions form part of a wider project involving connections with Carrer de Canàries, Carrer de Vicent Serra i Orvay and Carrer de Josep Riquer Llobet. The combined budget for those three connection works is €96,468.58 including VAT.

The municipality is also continuing to work on changes to the surrounding road network following the transfer of the relevant section of the EI-10 from the Consell to Ibiza Town Hall.

The Sa Real Parking Project Was Previously Dropped

The new roadside project should also be distinguished from the much larger underground parking project previously proposed for Sa Real.

In June 2026, Mayor Rafael Triguero announced that Ibiza Town Hall had definitively abandoned the proposed Sa Real car park after a process that included feedback from local residents.

The current €440,486 project concerns the roadside area alongside the EI-10 and is a separate infrastructure intervention. It does not revive the previously abandoned underground car-park proposal.

Tender Now Underway

The €440,486.14 figure is the maximum tender budget including VAT, rather than the final cost of completed works.

The project is currently being put out to tender, meaning a contractor must still be selected before construction can begin. The available information does not establish a confirmed construction start or completion date.

Once completed, the intervention is expected to provide a safer pedestrian route to Sa Real school, better organised parking and clearer vehicle movements around one of the city's main access roads.

For the area around Sa Real, the project represents a practical redesign of a previously informal roadside space, combining pedestrian accessibility, traffic organisation, parking, drainage and landscaping in a single intervention.
