Vehicle Arrivals to Ibiza Fall 16.2% During 2026 Season Under Entry Regulation

October 05, 2026

The number of vehicles arriving in Ibiza by sea fell by 16.2% during the main four months of the 2026 tourist season compared with the same period in 2024, the last summer before the island introduced its vehicle-entry regulation.

Between June and September 2026, a total of 91,754 vehicles disembarked in Ibiza, compared with 109,457 during the same four months of 2024. That represents 17,703 fewer vehicles arriving on the island.

The figures form part of the latest assessment of Ibiza's second summer operating under the system designed to limit vehicle pressure on the island's roads.

17,703 Fewer Vehicles

The comparison covers vehicle disembarkations at Ibiza's port during June, July, August and September.

In 2024, before the current regulation was in force, 109,457 vehicles arrived during those four months.

In 2026, the figure fell to 91,754.

The reduction was particularly visible during the busiest months of the season.

Vehicle arrivals were down by 11.5% in June compared with 2024, 18.1% in July, 19.3% in August and 10.3% in September.

When both vehicle arrivals and departures are counted, total vehicle movements under the passenger regime fell from 218,071 in June to September 2024 to 182,672 during the same period of 2026. That represents 35,399 fewer movements, or a reduction of approximately 16.2%.

Tourist Cars Also Decline

The reduction was even more significant when looking specifically at passenger cars.

Between June and September 2024, 96,332 cars disembarked in Ibiza.

During the same period in 2026, the number fell to 81,572.

That is a reduction of 14,760 cars, equivalent to 15.3%.

The monthly figures show the largest decrease in August, when car arrivals were 19.3% below the 2024 level.

Regulation Applied From June to September

Ibiza's vehicle-entry regulation was in force from June 1 to September 30 this year.

For 2026, the Consell d'Eivissa established a daily ceiling of 17,668 vehicles permitted to circulate on the island under the regulated system, excluding vehicles covered by the applicable exemptions.

Of that total, 14,000 places were allocated to rental cars, while 3,548 were available for visitors travelling with their own vehicles.

The regulation forms part of the legal framework established by Balearic Law 5/2024, which allows Ibiza to control vehicle entry and circulation during periods of high seasonal pressure.

Sharp Drop in Motorhomes and Caravans

The latest figures also show a substantial reduction in the number of caravans, motorhomes and other residential vehicles arriving in Ibiza.

Between January and September 2024, 4,467 such vehicles disembarked on the island.

During the same period in 2026, the number fell to 1,282.

That represents 3,185 fewer vehicles and a reduction of approximately 71.3%.

The 2026 rules also required caravans and motorhomes entering during the regulated period to meet the applicable conditions, including having a reservation at a campsite.

Public Transport Usage Rises

The reduction in vehicle arrivals coincided with a strong increase in public transport use.

Between April and August 2026, Ibiza's bus network recorded 4.96 million passenger journeys, 26.4% more than during the same period in 2025.

August was particularly strong, with more than 1.25 million passenger journeys, representing a 40.2% increase compared with August 2025.

The island's new bus service, operated by Alsa since April, has therefore become an important part of the wider mobility strategy being implemented alongside the vehicle restrictions.

What the Figures Show

The latest figures demonstrate that fewer vehicles arrived in Ibiza during the regulated months compared with the equivalent period before the restrictions were introduced.

However, the figures alone do not establish that the regulation was responsible for the entire 16.2% reduction.

Vehicle arrivals can also be influenced by factors including tourism demand, ferry capacity and pricing, travel patterns and wider economic conditions. Similarly, the increase in bus passengers cannot automatically be attributed entirely to the vehicle-entry restrictions.

The comparison nevertheless provides a clear measure of how vehicle arrivals have changed since Ibiza introduced its system for controlling seasonal vehicle pressure.

Ibiza's Second Summer of Regulation

The 2026 season was the second summer in which Ibiza operated with restrictions on vehicle entry and circulation.

The system was tightened this year, with the daily ceiling reduced compared with 2025 and the regulated period running from June 1 through September 30.

With the summer period now complete, the latest figures give the island its first full four-month comparison with the pre-regulation summer of 2024.

The data show fewer vehicles arriving by sea, fewer passenger cars and a particularly sharp decline in caravans and motorhomes, while public transport usage has continued to increase.
