Armin van Buuren Explores the Psychology of the Dancefloor in New Mini-Documentary Filmed at [UNVRS]

22 September 2026

Armin van Buuren has released a new mini-documentary exploring what happens psychologically and emotionally when thousands of people share the same experience on a dancefloor.

Titled “The Psychology of the Dancefloor”, the approximately 10-minute film was created around Armin’s A State of Trance residency at [UNVRS] in Ibiza, shifting the focus away from the DJ booth and onto the people experiencing the music.

Looking Beyond the DJ Booth

The documentary explores questions surrounding the collective experience of electronic music, including why people can form connections with strangers, why particular moments on a dancefloor can trigger strong emotions and how sharing the same musical experience can create a sense of belonging.

Armin worked with psychotherapist Rachel Giddings for the project, bringing a psychological perspective to the experience of the crowd during his extended sets.

Rather than focusing primarily on the artist, the documentary looks at the audience and the shared experience created on the dancefloor.

Five Hours of A State of Trance

The project is closely connected to Armin van Buuren's first A State of Trance residency at [UNVRS].

The residency began on September 7 and runs across five Monday dates through October 5. Each date features a five-hour extended set from Armin, allowing him to build a longer musical journey rather than a conventional shorter club set.

The residency is also marking 25 years of A State of Trance, the electronic music brand created by Armin in 2001.

Why a Dancefloor Becomes a Shared Experience

One of the central questions explored by the documentary is what makes a large crowd respond collectively to music.

People who arrive at a club as complete strangers can find themselves reacting to the same build-up, breakdown or musical climax at exactly the same moment.

The documentary examines the emotional connections that can emerge from these shared experiences and why some moments can remain memorable long after the music has stopped.

[UNVRS] Provides the Setting

The documentary was filmed around Armin's residency at [UNVRS], where the five-hour format allows the artist to develop a longer musical narrative.

Each performance is structured as an extended journey, with the music moving through different stages across the night.

That format provides the setting for the documentary's central question: what is happening on the other side of the DJ booth while the music is unfolding?

The Final Ibiza Dates

The documentary arrives as the A State of Trance residency enters its final stage.

The next scheduled date is Monday, September 28, when Armin van Buuren will perform a B2B set with Funk Tribu, with Ginchy also on the lineup. The Bunker will feature Lawton and MDDLTN.

The residency will conclude on Monday, October 5, when Armin performs the final five-hour extended set. Sarrah De Warren and Dan Harrison are scheduled for Bunker.

A Different Look at Club Culture

“The Psychology of the Dancefloor” gives the A State of Trance anniversary celebrations a perspective that goes beyond the music itself.

After 25 years of A State of Trance, the documentary focuses on the community that has developed around the project and examines why people continue to seek out collective experiences on a dancefloor.

The result is a look at Ibiza club culture from the perspective of the people standing in front of the DJ, rather than the person behind the decks.

“The Psychology of the Dancefloor: An A State of Trance Documentary” is available to watch online through Armin van Buuren's official YouTube channel.

The documentary runs for approximately 10 minutes and was released as the 2026 A State of Trance residency continues at [UNVRS].
