Ibiza Airport recorded its busiest August on record in 2026, handling 1,519,201 passengers during the month as peak-season traffic continued to grow.

The figure represents a 2.5% increase compared with August 2025, when the airport handled 1,481,444 passengers. Aircraft movements increased even faster, rising 5.2% to 13,643 take-offs and landings during the month.

The latest figures, released by Aena on September 15, provide another indication of the scale of Ibiza's airport traffic during the busiest period of the year.

More Than 1.5 Million Passengers in August

Of the 1,519,201 passengers recorded in August, 1,515,603 travelled on commercial flights.

National routes accounted for 505,449 commercial passengers, an increase of 6% compared with August 2025.

International routes remained the larger part of commercial traffic, with 1,010,154 passengers, up 0.8% year on year.

A further 3,598 passengers were recorded on non-commercial flights.

The figures represent passengers arriving at and departing from the airport, rather than the number of unique people visiting Ibiza.

The UK Remains the Biggest International Market

The United Kingdom continued to provide the largest volume of international passenger traffic to and from Ibiza in August.

There were 347,745 passengers on Ibiza-UK routes during the month.

Italy followed with 230,832 passengers, ahead of Germany with 107,720, France with 90,890 and the Netherlands with 77,537.

Together, these five countries accounted for the majority of Ibiza Airport's international passenger traffic during the month.

The figures underline the importance of European markets to Ibiza during the peak summer season.

Aircraft Movements Grew Faster Than Passenger Numbers

While passenger traffic increased by 2.5%, aircraft movements rose by 5.2%.

Ibiza Airport handled 13,643 aircraft movements in August, counting both take-offs and landings. That compares with 12,967 movements in August 2025.

The difference means flight activity grew more quickly than passenger numbers.

The monthly total also highlights the intensity of airport operations during Ibiza's peak travel period.

Nearly 6.8 Million Passengers So Far in 2026

The strong August result pushed Ibiza Airport's cumulative passenger total for the first eight months of 2026 to 6,778,163.

That is 3% higher than the 6,581,706 passengers recorded during the same period of 2025.

Aircraft movements between January and August reached 63,056, an increase of 3.6% compared with the first eight months of last year.

The airport therefore entered the final part of the main summer season with both passenger traffic and flight activity above 2025 levels.

August Sets a New Monthly Benchmark

August 2025 had already established a record for August, with 1,481,444 passengers.

The 2026 total surpassed that figure by 37,757 passengers, making this the highest passenger total ever recorded at the airport for the month of August.

The new record comes despite the relatively modest year-on-year increase in passenger numbers, showing that Ibiza is continuing to operate at an exceptionally high level of seasonal traffic.

International Travel Still Dominates

International passengers accounted for the larger share of Ibiza Airport's commercial traffic in August.

Of the 1,515,603 commercial passengers, 1,010,154 travelled on international connections, while 505,449 travelled on domestic routes.

That means roughly two-thirds of commercial passenger traffic was international during the month.

The pattern is consistent with Ibiza's role as a major international tourism destination, while domestic connections with mainland Spain and other Balearic airports continue to provide an important part of the airport's year-round network.

Ibiza Airport Serves Both Ibiza and Formentera

Ibiza Airport is not used exclusively by people travelling to Ibiza.

Aena states that the airport serves both Ibiza and Formentera and that approximately 95% of people entering or leaving the two islands use the airport.

This makes the airport's passenger figures relevant to the wider Pitiusas, although the monthly figures do not identify how many passengers continued onward to Formentera.

A Highly Seasonal Airport

The August figures also underline the extraordinary seasonality of Ibiza's airport traffic.

Aena describes Ibiza Airport as having a strongly seasonal demand pattern and a predominantly tourism-oriented traffic profile.

The difference between the intense traffic of July and August and the considerably quieter winter months is one of the defining characteristics of the airport.

August therefore remains particularly important for understanding the scale of travel activity during Ibiza's peak season.

A Record Comes as Airport Expansion Is Debated

The new passenger record comes at an important moment in the discussion surrounding the future of Ibiza Airport.

The Spanish Government has approved the DORA III regulatory framework for 2027 to 2031, which includes €229.7 million in planned investment for Ibiza Airport.

Aena's terminal remodelling plans include new passenger-processing facilities, additional boarding gates and changes designed to accommodate separate Schengen and non-Schengen operations.

The planned works and their implications for future airport traffic have become the subject of public debate on the island.

The latest passenger figures do not by themselves establish that the planned project will increase traffic, but they provide a current snapshot of the demand the airport is already handling during the summer peak.

2025 Also Set an Annual Record

The August result follows a record year for Ibiza Airport in 2025.

The airport ended last year with 9,138,224 passengers, an increase of 0.7% compared with 2024. That surpassed the previous annual record of 9,069,410 passengers recorded in 2024.

International traffic accounted for 5,345,383 passengers in 2025, while 3,774,781 travelled on domestic connections.

The United Kingdom was also the largest international market across the full year, followed by Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.

What the August Numbers Tell Us

The latest figures show that Ibiza Airport remains under substantial pressure during the height of the tourism season.

More than 1.5 million passenger movements were recorded in August alone, while the number of aircraft movements exceeded 13,600.

Passenger traffic grew more moderately than aircraft activity, but both measures were higher than in August 2025.

With 6.78 million passengers already recorded between January and August, the 2026 airport statistics are continuing to run above the same period last year.

Another Record Summer for Ibiza Airport

Ibiza Airport's August figures provide another clear snapshot of the scale of travel to and from the Pitiusas during the peak summer months.
