The centre of Jesús will reopen to traffic on Friday, September 25, after the completion of a temporary pedestrianisation trial carried out over recent weeks.

The trial was introduced to test different ways of organising traffic and public space in the village and to gather real-world information before deciding what mobility arrangements could be introduced permanently.

The reopening means general traffic will return to the centre, although several of the changes introduced during the trial will remain in place.

Traffic returns on September 25

From Friday, September 25, vehicles will once again be able to circulate through the centre of Jesús.

The decision follows the end of the pilot programme, which began on August 28 and was designed as a temporary and reversible measure.

During the trial, a section of approximately 100 metres of the EI-100A passing through Jesús was closed to traffic.

The municipality used the period to collect information on traffic behaviour and the effects of the changes on surrounding streets.

What the trial was designed to test

The pedestrianisation test was introduced to examine how the centre could become safer and more accessible for pedestrians while maintaining appropriate access for residents, businesses, services and vehicles that need to reach the village.

The council has stressed that no permanent decision has yet been taken.

Instead, municipal technical services will now analyse the traffic counts, routes used during the trial and feedback received from residents, businesses and other users of the area.

Some changes will remain

Although traffic will return to the centre, not everything will go back to the arrangement that existed before the trial.

The section of Carrer de Faisà affected by the temporary changes will remain closed to traffic.

The taxi stand will also remain in place.

In addition, the direction of traffic on the road connecting Carrer de Gavina with Carrer de Faisà will continue under the arrangement introduced during the pilot.

These measures will remain while the municipality assesses the next steps.

Residents raised concerns about diverted traffic

The pilot also highlighted concerns in streets surrounding the central area.

Residents of Carrer de Estruç told the municipality earlier this month that they supported the idea of calming and pedestrianising the centre of Jesús, but said they had experienced a significant increase in traffic on their street since the new traffic arrangement was introduced.

They also raised concerns about the speed of some vehicles.

The municipality said it would take those observations into account as part of its assessment of the pilot.

No permanent traffic plan has been decided

The end of the trial does not mean that the municipality has decided against pedestrianisation in the future.

Instead, the council will use the information collected during the pilot to examine which elements worked, which need to be modified and what other options could be considered.

Any future arrangement will have to go through the corresponding administrative process and will be presented so that residents and the wider public can be informed and provide feedback before a definitive decision is adopted.

Reducing through-traffic remains an objective

One of the municipality's stated objectives is to reduce traffic passing through the centre of Jesús when drivers have no destination in the village.

At the same time, the council wants to maintain suitable access for people who live and work in Jesús, local businesses, services and necessary vehicles.

The challenge is therefore not simply deciding whether vehicles should enter the centre, but finding a traffic arrangement that balances pedestrian safety with the daily mobility needs of the village.

What happens next

With the general reopening on September 25, the pilot phase comes to an end.

The next stage will be the analysis of the data and feedback collected during the trial.

Municipal technical staff will examine vehicle counts, traffic routes, effects on nearby streets and suggestions received during the test period.

Only after that assessment will the municipality determine what changes, if any, should be considered for the future.

Jesús returns to normal traffic, for now

For drivers, Friday will mark the return of general traffic through the centre of Jesús after almost a month of temporary restrictions.

For the municipality, however, the process is not finished.

The pilot was designed to provide evidence before making a permanent decision, and the coming weeks will be focused on analysing the results.

For now, the centre reopens to traffic on September 25, while selected changes remain and the future of Jesús's traffic and public-space layout is assessed.
