A vehicle operating without the required passenger-transport licence in Ibiza has been fined €15,000 after police found it carrying more passengers than authorised.

The vehicle was stopped by Ibiza Local Police on Tuesday, September 22, in the Juan Carlos I area while transporting tourists who had arrived on a cruise ship.

Officers also found that an existing order for the vehicle to be immobilised was recorded against it.

Journey from Ibiza port to Playa d'en Bossa

When officers questioned the passengers, they established that they had booked a journey from the port of Ibiza to a hotel in Playa d'en Bossa.

The agreed price for the journey was €50.

The passengers were tourists who had arrived in Ibiza by cruise ship and were being transported by the vehicle when it was stopped.

Police also found that the vehicle was travelling with more passengers than permitted.

The driver was therefore reported for an additional road-traffic offence relating to excess occupancy.

The driver was sanctioned under the Balearic Islands transport legislation with a €15,000 fine for carrying out passenger transport without the required licence.

The applicable transport legislation provides for fines of €15,000 to €25,000 for certain very serious offences involving public passenger transport in tourist vehicles.

The police action therefore involved more than the excess-passenger offence identified when the vehicle was stopped.

Vehicle already subject to an immobilisation order

During the inspection, officers also discovered that an order to immobilise the vehicle was already recorded against it.

Following the intervention, the vehicle was removed by tow truck and taken to the municipal vehicle depot.
