Amazon estimates that its activity in Spain now supports close to 200,000 jobs, according to a new study presented as the company marks 15 years since launching its Spanish online store.

The figure includes Amazon's own employees as well as workers connected to its supply chain, services, the wider economy and the thousands of small and medium-sized businesses that sell through its platform.

The report, titled “Amazon in Spain: 15 Years of Impact”, was prepared by IE University and presented at Amazon's 15th-anniversary event on Monday, September 21.

More Than 30,000 Amazon Employees

Amazon currently employs more than 30,000 people permanently in Spain, working across more than 400 different professional roles.

That is only part of the employment figure outlined in the IE University report.

More than 50,000 additional people provide services connected to Amazon's logistics centres and corporate offices, including areas such as consulting, security and catering.

More Than 53,000 Indirect Jobs

The report estimates that Amazon's presence in Spain is also associated with more than 53,000 indirect jobs.

These include employment in sectors such as logistics, construction and professional services.

The study also estimates that Amazon's economic activity supports nearly 20,000 induced jobs elsewhere in the Spanish economy.

These figures are estimates of employment linked to Amazon's activity rather than a count of people directly employed by the company.

Thousands of SMEs Add to the Employment Impact

Another part of the calculation relates to small and medium-sized businesses selling products through Amazon's stores.

The report estimates that more than 45,000 people are employed by these businesses to manage their online operations.

Amazon says thousands of Spanish SMEs use its platform to sell products both domestically and internationally.

The company has increasingly highlighted the role of these businesses in its wider economic footprint in Spain.

€25 Billion Invested Since 2011

Amazon says it has invested more than €25 billion in Spain since its arrival in 2011.

The investment has supported the expansion of its logistics network, technology operations, corporate offices and cloud infrastructure.

Today, the company operates around 40 logistics facilities in Spain, alongside two corporate headquarters, two innovation centres and an Amazon Web Services infrastructure region.

Amazon's Spanish Expansion Continues

The company's expansion is continuing into new areas of the country.

Amazon plans to open its first distribution centre in Spain in Zaragoza during 2026, as well as a new logistics station in Paterna, Valencia.

The new facilities are part of the company's ongoing expansion of its delivery and logistics network.

Major AWS Investment Also Underway

Amazon is also planning a separate major investment in Spain's digital infrastructure.

The company has increased its planned investment in its AWS cloud infrastructure in Spain to €33.7 billion through 2035.

Amazon estimates that this investment could contribute around €31.7 billion to Spain's GDP and support the equivalent of 29,900 full-time jobs per year across businesses connected to the project.

These projected employment figures include direct, indirect and induced jobs and refer to the future investment programme rather than jobs already created.

From an Online Bookshop to a Major Employer

Amazon launched its Spanish online store on September 15, 2011.

The business initially focused primarily on books before expanding into a much wider range of products and services, including logistics, cloud computing, entertainment, devices and artificial intelligence.

Fifteen years later, the company has a significantly larger presence across the Spanish economy than it had when it first entered the market.

The Wider Economic Footprint

The new IE University report attempts to measure that wider footprint rather than simply counting Amazon's own employees.

By including workers providing services at Amazon facilities, indirect employment across the supply chain, induced employment and jobs connected to SMEs selling through the platform, the study arrives at a total of close to 200,000 jobs linked to the company's activity.

It is important to distinguish this measure from Amazon's direct workforce.

More than 30,000 people are employed permanently by Amazon itself, while the remainder represents employment that the study attributes to the wider economic activity surrounding the company.

Amazon's 15 Years in Spain

The anniversary comes as Amazon positions Spain as an important market for its European operations.

Alongside its retail and logistics network, the company has expanded its presence in cloud computing and technology, while continuing to invest in infrastructure.

The company's latest figures show how significantly its footprint has grown since 2011, with more than €25 billion already invested and more than 30,000 permanent employees now working in Spain.

A Growing Digital and Logistics Presence

Amazon's expansion reflects the broader growth of e-commerce and digital infrastructure in Spain.

Its operations now extend from distribution centres and delivery networks to cloud computing, technology development and services supporting independent businesses.

The latest employment estimate therefore provides a broader picture of the economic activity associated with the company after 15 years in the Spanish market.

For now, the headline figure is close to 200,000 jobs linked to Amazon's activity across Spain, while the company itself directly employs more than 30,000 people.
