A total of 256 people in Ibiza have benefited from food cards provided through the Balearic Government's Basic Material Assistance Programme, supporting vulnerable families with children across the island.

The programme has reached 8,376 people across the Balearic Islands, corresponding to 2,503 family units. In Ibiza, the beneficiaries belong to 85 families.

Support for Families With Children

The Basic Material Assistance Programme is aimed at people and families experiencing vulnerability, with one of the eligibility conditions being that the household has children in its care.

The cards are intended to help families cover essential purchases, including food and hygiene products.

256 Beneficiaries in Ibiza

Of the 8,376 people benefiting across the Balearic Islands, 7,228 are residents of Mallorca, 892 are in Menorca and 256 are in Ibiza.

The Ibiza figure represents 85 family units.

Mallorca accounts for 2,227 beneficiary families, while Menorca has 191.

Where the Cards Can Be Used

In the Balearic Islands, beneficiaries can use the cards at Alcampo, Carrefour and Eroski supermarkets.

Families can choose which of the participating chains they use for their purchases.

The cards cover food products, hygiene products and other items included within the programme's definition of basic material assistance.

European Funding

The programme is financed through the European Social Fund Plus, known as FSE+.

A total of €12,783,794 has been allocated for the programme covering the 2025 to 2028 period.

The Balearic Government awarded management of the programme to the Spanish Red Cross, which is responsible for distributing the cards and providing accompanying support to beneficiaries.

Support Goes Beyond the Card

The programme also includes individual support for participating families.

The Red Cross carries out an initial interview when the card is delivered and a follow-up interview several months later.

The aim is to establish an individual support pathway focused on social inclusion and to connect families with other available services when appropriate.

Support can include information about social resources, referrals, psychological and emotional support, training and assistance related to social and employment integration.

Additional Food Assistance

Families without children in their care do not qualify for this particular card programme.

The Balearic Government says it has therefore also allocated additional funding to organisations providing food distribution and social dining services for people who fall outside the card scheme.

Since December 2023, the regional government says it has allocated close to €6 million to food-security initiatives through different funding calls.

Among the measures are funding for organisations involved in food distribution and social dining programmes, as well as additional support programmes published during 2026.

Assistance Across the Balearic Islands

The distribution of the cards forms part of a wider effort to provide basic material assistance to vulnerable households throughout the Balearic Islands.

The largest number of beneficiaries is in Mallorca, followed by Menorca and Ibiza.

The programme combines direct assistance for eligible families with additional food-security initiatives intended to reach people who do not meet the card programme's eligibility conditions.

Helping Families Cover Basic Needs

For the 85 beneficiary families in Ibiza, the cards are designed to provide practical assistance with everyday essential purchases.

Rather than distributing specific food parcels, the programme allows families to choose eligible products from participating supermarkets.

The accompanying support from the Red Cross is intended to connect the financial assistance with longer-term social inclusion measures.

The 2025-2028 Programme

The current programme covers the period from 2025 through 2028 and is supported by European FSE+ funding.

The Balearic Government says its objective is to provide basic food and material assistance to vulnerable people and families across Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza while linking beneficiaries with additional social-support resources.

As of September 2026, 256 people in Ibiza are among those benefiting from the programme.
