Banyalbufar is asking the Spanish Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands to declare the municipality a disaster-affected area following severe damage caused by a storm on September 9.

The request has been made by acting mayor Joan Vives, who says financial assistance is needed to help residents cover the cost of repairs after the storm caused extensive damage, particularly in the coastal settlement of Port des Canonge.

More Than 80% of Homes Reportedly Affected

Port des Canonge has been identified as the worst-affected part of Banyalbufar.

Vives said that more than 80% of homes in the settlement had been affected either directly or indirectly by the storm. Around 60 people live in Port des Canonge, while Banyalbufar as a whole has a population of roughly 570.

The reported damage includes roofs, fallen trees, power lines, roads and other infrastructure.

Storm Hit on September 9

The severe weather affected Mallorca on Wednesday, September 9.

According to the Balearic Government, the episode of rain, thunderstorms and strong winds generated 185 emergency incidents across Mallorca and 210 across the Balearic Islands.

Port des Canonge was singled out by the regional emergency authorities as one of the areas most seriously affected, with the removal of fallen pine trees and restoration of electricity among the immediate priorities.

Wind Gusts Reached 158 Kilometres Per Hour

Reports from the affected area said wind gusts reached 158 kilometres per hour.

Hundreds of pine trees were brought down, with some falling onto or close to properties and roads. Roof tiles and other debris were scattered through the settlement, while power infrastructure was also damaged.

Emergency teams were deployed to clear access routes and remove dangerous trees and branches.

Emergency Crews Worked to Restore Access

The response included personnel from IBANAT, the Mallorca Fire Service and emergency services, together with resources requested by Banyalbufar Town Hall.

Teams worked on removing trees, branches, cables, roof tiles and other debris from streets and access routes.

The Balearic Government said the Port des Canonge area was in the recovery phase following the storm and that clearing fallen pines was a priority.

Electricity Network Also Damaged

The storm affected the electricity network in several parts of Mallorca.

At Port des Canonge, fallen pine trees disrupted electricity supplies and contributed to the closure of the access road while emergency and utility crews worked in the area.

Earlier reports said the electricity supply was operating under difficult conditions while technicians secured damaged cables and worked alongside emergency crews.

Roads and Paths Remain a Concern

The storm also left roads and paths around Port des Canonge obstructed by fallen trees and debris.

Vives said some paths remained impassable more than a week after the storm and that further work would be required to clear vegetation and trees in wooded areas.

Additional clearing work was due to begin on Monday, September 21.

Residents Asked to Document Damage

Banyalbufar Town Hall is asking affected residents to provide details of the damage they have suffered so that the municipality can compile an overall assessment.

Residents have also been given a designated point for the disposal of storm debris, while collection sacks have been made available in streets for broken roof tiles and smaller materials.

The documentation is important because the municipality is seeking access to compensation measures for affected households.

Municipality Says It Needs Outside Assistance

Banyalbufar is one of Mallorca's smaller municipalities and has limited municipal resources.

The acting mayor argues that financial assistance from higher levels of government is necessary to deal with the scale of the damage, particularly in Port des Canonge.

The municipality has therefore formally contacted the Government Delegation requesting the declaration needed to open compensation programmes for residents.

Declaration Has Not Yet Been Granted

The municipality is requesting disaster-affected status, but no such declaration had been granted at the time of the latest reports.

The request is intended to create access to financial assistance for residents and help the local authority address the wider recovery costs.

The distinction is important: Port des Canonge has suffered documented storm damage and Banyalbufar has submitted a formal request, but the declaration itself remains pending.

Recovery Work Continues

More than a week after the September 9 storm, work remains underway to clear roads, remove dangerous trees and manage the debris left behind.

The Balearic emergency services have continued coordinating recovery operations, while Banyalbufar is compiling information on the damage suffered by residents and public infrastructure.

Port des Canonge Faces a Lengthy Cleanup

The damage caused by the storm has left a substantial cleanup operation in Port des Canonge.

With widespread damage to trees, roofs and electrical infrastructure, local authorities are continuing to restore access and remove remaining hazards.

At the same time, Banyalbufar is seeking government assistance to help residents recover from the financial impact of the storm.

For now, the requested disaster-zone declaration remains pending, while recovery work continues across Port des Canonge.
