Scientists Warn of Potential New Threat to Ibiza and Formentera's Posidonia From Invasive Asian Seaweed

Scientists are keeping a close watch on the spread of an invasive Asian seaweed that could pose a significant ecological risk to Ibiza and Formentera if it becomes established in the Balearic Islands.
Rugulopteryx okamurae, commonly known as the Asian seaweed, has spread rapidly through parts of Spain and the Mediterranean over the past decade. Researchers from the Balearic Islands centre of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, IEO-CSIC, are monitoring the situation because of the potential impact on marine ecosystems, including Posidonia oceanica meadows.
The species has not become established in the Balearics
The most important point for Ibiza and Formentera is that scientists are not reporting an established population of Rugulopteryx okamurae around the Pitiusas.
IEO-CSIC specialists working on alien and invasive species in the Balearics said in September that they had not detected the species established in the archipelago.
Earlier information from Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition also described the Balearics as the only Spanish coastal region without an officially confirmed established presence, although the ministry noted that the alga had already been observed among Posidonia wrack.
Records have nevertheless reached the Balearic area
There is a distinction between an established population and individual records or observations.
MITECO's latest assessment of the western Mediterranean says the distribution of Rugulopteryx okamurae has extended into the Levantino-Balear marine demarcation, with several records dating from 2023 onwards and extending as far as the Balearic Islands.
That does not establish that a persistent population is currently growing around Ibiza or Formentera.
The latest scientific warnings instead focus on preventing the species from becoming established.
Why Posidonia is particularly important
The concern is especially relevant to Ibiza and Formentera because of their extensive Posidonia oceanica meadows.
Posidonia is a marine flowering plant rather than an alga and forms one of the Mediterranean's most important coastal ecosystems.
In the Balearics, its meadows provide habitat and nursery areas for marine life, help maintain water quality and contribute to the protection of beaches and coastal systems.
The Balearic Government describes Posidonia as the archipelago's principal marine ecosystem and estimates that the islands contain around 650 square kilometres of Posidonia meadows.
A highly invasive species
Rugulopteryx okamurae originates from the northwestern Pacific.
It was first detected in Spanish waters in the Strait of Gibraltar in 2015 and has since expanded along extensive sections of the Spanish Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts.
The species has also established populations in other parts of the Mediterranean, including areas of France and Italy.
The Spanish Government now includes it in the national catalogue of invasive alien species.
It can spread rapidly
One reason scientists are concerned is the alga's ability to reproduce and spread through fragments.
A 2026 study examining Rugulopteryx within a Posidonia meadow in southern Spain found that the species has a strong clonal reproductive capacity and can produce large numbers of vegetative propagules.
The research found that reproduction is particularly active during part of the summer, helping maintain dense populations over time.
Its ability to produce and disperse large amounts of biomass makes early detection particularly important.
Scientists have documented extreme coverage
In areas where the species has become established, researchers have documented very high levels of seabed coverage.
A study of invaded rocky habitats in the northwestern Mediterranean found that Rugulopteryx could colonise up to 100% of available substrate in some locations, substantially altering the biological communities living there.
That figure refers to affected invaded sites. It does not mean that the seaweed currently covers 100% of any area around Ibiza or Formentera.
Posidonia meadows can also be affected
The threat is not limited to rocky seabeds.
Research from Alicante documented Rugulopteryx growing over dead Posidonia oceanica matte, with large quantities of detached material also accumulating on nearby beaches.
More recent research has specifically examined the species' ability to invade Posidonia meadows, highlighting the potential for competition and changes to native marine communities.
Scientists in the Balearics therefore consider a future establishment of the species a significant ecological concern.
The exact risk to the Pitiusas remains uncertain
Researchers are careful not to predict precisely what would happen if Rugulopteryx became established around Ibiza and Formentera.
The IEO-CSIC specialists say there is not currently enough information to determine the exact scale of the risk that the species would pose in the Balearic archipelago.
The potential impact, however, is considered serious enough to justify continued monitoring and preventive action.
This distinction is important: the scientists are warning about a potential future impact rather than reporting an invasion already underway in Ibiza and Formentera.
Fishing and tourism could also be affected
The ecological consequences are not the only concern.
In areas where Rugulopteryx has become abundant, large quantities of detached seaweed can accumulate along the seabed and on beaches.
Researchers and Spanish authorities have reported impacts on fisheries, including problems with fishing gear and catches, as well as additional costs for coastal authorities responsible for removing accumulated biomass.
Beach accumulations can also alter the appearance and use of affected coastal areas.
For an island economy closely connected to beaches and the marine environment, that creates an additional reason for early prevention.
Boats could help spread the species
Human activity is an important part of the prevention strategy.
Spain's national strategy identifies maritime traffic and recreational vessels among the potential pathways through which fragments of the alga can be transported.
Fragments can potentially attach to boats, anchors, fishing equipment and diving gear before being moved to another location.
This is why authorities recommend appropriate cleaning and disinfection of equipment and vessels.
Early detection is considered crucial
Once a large invasive population becomes established, complete eradication can be extremely difficult.
MITECO's national strategy says the available scientific knowledge does not support generalised eradication of the species in areas where it is already established.
Instead, management focuses heavily on preventing further expansion, detecting new populations quickly and reducing their impacts.
That makes surveillance particularly important in regions that have not yet developed an established population.
Divers and boat users can help
Scientists are also encouraging members of the public to contribute to monitoring.
Divers, fishermen, sailors and other regular users of the sea can report possible sightings through citizen-science initiatives such as Observadores del Mar.
Photographs and location information can help specialists investigate suspected new occurrences.
Early reports can be particularly valuable when a species is difficult to distinguish from native seaweeds during its initial appearance.
The alga can remain active after reaching beaches
Another challenge is the condition of the seaweed after it has washed ashore.
According to the researchers monitoring the species in the Balearics, Rugulopteryx can retain photosynthetic activity even after remaining stranded for a prolonged period.
That means removal and handling of beach accumulations needs to be managed carefully to avoid accidentally contributing to further dispersal.
The national strategy includes specific guidance for the management and removal of biomass.
A national response is already in place
Spain approved its national strategy for Rugulopteryx okamurae in 2022.
The strategy provides a framework for management, monitoring, control and possible local eradication measures, while recognising that completely eliminating established populations is generally not considered feasible.
MITECO has also developed guidance for autonomous communities preparing plans to manage the biomass generated by the species.
The response therefore already exists. The priority for the Balearics is preventing the situation seen in other coastal regions from developing on the islands.
The Balearics continue to monitor their waters
The warning comes as the Balearic Islands continue their wider programme of marine conservation and Posidonia monitoring.
The regional government reported in February 2026 that more than half of its monitored Posidonia stations were in good or very good condition, with the proportion classified as deficient or poor falling from 25% in 2023 to 17% in 2025.
That monitoring provides an important baseline for detecting future changes in the condition of the meadows.
Why Ibiza and Formentera are particularly relevant
The Pitiusas have extensive seagrass meadows and a coastline where marine ecosystems are closely linked to the quality of beaches and coastal waters.
The Posidonia meadows around Ibiza and Formentera are also a major part of the islands' environmental identity.
For that reason, scientists say preventing the establishment of an aggressive invasive seaweed is preferable to trying to manage a large population after it has already spread.
A warning, not an invasion report
The current situation should not be confused with an established Rugulopteryx invasion of Ibiza and Formentera.
No established population has been officially confirmed in the Pitiusas.
The concern comes from what has already happened elsewhere: the species has spread quickly, formed dense populations and affected marine habitats and coastal activities in several regions.
Its proximity to the Balearic region is therefore prompting continued scientific surveillance.
What residents and visitors can do
People using the waters around Ibiza and Formentera should avoid moving unidentified seaweed between beaches or marine locations.
Divers and fishermen who believe they have found Rugulopteryx can photograph it, record the location and submit the information through recognised marine-observation platforms.
Boat owners should also follow established cleaning and disinfection practices for hulls, anchors and equipment.
The objective is simple: identify any possible new occurrence early and reduce the chance of accidental spread.
Protecting the Pitiusas' marine ecosystem
For Ibiza and Formentera, the issue is ultimately about prevention.
The islands are not being reported as overwhelmed by Rugulopteryx okamurae, but scientists are watching its expansion elsewhere and assessing the possibility of future arrival or establishment.
With Posidonia playing such an important role in the Pitiusan marine environment, early detection and responsible maritime practices could be important in keeping the invasive species from gaining a foothold.
For now, the Asian seaweed remains a potential threat rather than an established invasion of Ibiza and Formentera, but its rapid expansion elsewhere is why scientists are keeping a close watch on the islands.
