Formentera is famous for its beaches and turquoise water, but some of the island's most impressive scenery is found above the coastline, along historic paths, rocky headlands and elevated stretches of the island.

A new guide published on September 18 highlights eight panoramic spots where visitors can take in everything from the cliffs of La Mola and the western coast to the wetlands around Estany Pudent and views towards Ibiza.

These are not all officially designated viewpoints. Instead, they range from natural vantage points and historic landmarks to coastal paths and beaches that offer particularly good views.

La Mola Lighthouse

At the eastern end of Formentera, the La Mola lighthouse sits on the edge of the island's high eastern plateau.

The lighthouse itself stands around 120 metres above sea level, while nearby Sa Talaïassa rises to 192 metres, the highest point on Formentera.

The surrounding cliffs and open Mediterranean views make this one of the island's most striking landscapes. The lighthouse area can also be appreciated around sunrise and sunset.

The building has an additional cultural role, having hosted a space dedicated to Formentera's maritime heritage since 2019. From 2026, its cultural and educational programme focuses on the island's artistic and cultural heritage.

Racó de Sa Pujada

Racó de Sa Pujada is reached from the historic Camí de Sa Pujada, the old route connecting Es Caló with the La Mola plateau.

The route climbs through a landscape of stone, pine trees and Mediterranean vegetation, with wide views opening across Formentera's northern coastline.

The official green route is around four kilometres long and includes a significant climb, so appropriate footwear is recommended.

From the route and surrounding area, visitors can look across sections of the Tramuntana coast and appreciate the dramatic change in elevation as the path climbs towards La Mola.

Punta Prima

Near Es Pujols, Punta Prima combines coastal scenery with one of Formentera's historic defensive towers.

The Torre de Punta Prima was built in 1762 as part of the island's network of coastal watchtowers, designed to monitor possible pirate attacks and communicate warnings using smoke and fire signals.

Today, the area provides open views towards Ibiza and along the cliffs in the direction of La Mola.

The tower itself is not open to visitors, but the surrounding area can be explored and provides a natural vantage point over the eastern coastline.

Ses Illetes

Ses Illetes offers a very different kind of panorama.

Located within the Ses Salines Natural Park, the northern peninsula of Es Trucadors places visitors between two sides of the coastline, with Ses Illetes to the west and Llevant to the east.

Walking further towards the northern tip reveals views towards the neighbouring island of Espalmador.

The landscape is largely at sea level rather than elevated, but the narrow shape of the peninsula creates an unusual opportunity to see two stretches of coastline from almost the same position.

Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse

At the southwestern tip of Formentera, the Cap de Barbaria lighthouse stands beside dramatic cliffs and an exceptionally open western horizon.

The surrounding landscape is notably dry and sparsely vegetated, adding to the sense of isolation at the island's southernmost point.

On clear evenings, the area is particularly popular for sunset views, with Ibiza visible in the distance when conditions allow.

The lighthouse is also closely associated with Formentera's cultural landscape after appearing in the 2001 film “Lucía y el sexo”.

Punta Roja

Punta Roja offers a quieter alternative around La Mola for visitors looking for coastal scenery away from some of the island's more established tourist locations.

The area is reached via dirt tracks near El Pilar de la Mola and passes through pine and juniper landscapes before opening towards the coast.

The main attraction is the rugged shoreline and the elevated views across the Mediterranean and towards the cliffs of La Mola.

Because the area has fewer facilities than the island's better-known landmarks, visitors should come prepared with water and sun protection and stay well back from cliff edges.

Estany Pudent

Formentera's panoramic scenery is not limited to the sea.

Estany Pudent, between La Savina and Es Pujols, offers views across one of the island's most important wetland environments.

The lagoon is an important birdwatching area, with flamingos, stilts, shelducks and other species appearing depending on the season and conditions.

The surrounding routes provide a different perspective of Formentera, replacing cliffs and beaches with salt flats, wetlands and open landscapes.

Bathing in Estany Pudent is prohibited, but walking and cycling around the area provide opportunities to experience its natural environment.

Camí de Sa Guia

The Camí de Sa Guia connects La Savina with the area around Cavall d'en Borràs and Ses Illetes.

The route follows a landscape shaped partly by Formentera's historic salt industry, passing through vegetation, saltwater landscapes and coastal areas.

The official route from La Savina to Ses Illetes is approximately 3.3 kilometres and can be completed on foot or by bicycle.

Along the way, visitors can see the former salt-production landscape as well as views across the lagoons and towards the sea. The route also provides perspectives towards Ibiza and Es Vedrà from some sections.

Seeing Formentera from a different angle

Formentera's compact size means that dramatic changes in landscape can happen within a relatively short distance.

From the high cliffs of La Mola and Cap de Barbaria to the wetlands of Estany Pudent and the narrow sands of Es Trucadors, these panoramic locations show that the island's scenery extends well beyond its famous beaches.

For visitors exploring Formentera by car, bicycle or on foot, adding a few of these vantage points to an island itinerary offers another way to experience its coastline, countryside, history and natural environment.
