A total of 128 people took part in the final beach clean-up of the 2026 season organised by O Beach Ibiza and Bam-Bu-Ku in the bay of Sant Antoni on Saturday, September 19.

The fourth and final environmental action of the summer brought together local residents, workers, visitors and a particularly strong representation from sports clubs across the municipality, all joining the effort to remove waste from the coastline.

Final Clean-Up of the Season

Participants gathered at Bam-Bu-Ku at 09:30 before heading out to different areas of the Sant Antoni coastline.

The event marked the conclusion of this year's programme of beach clean-ups, which has been organised by O Beach Ibiza and Bam-Bu-Ku in collaboration with Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Hall.

After completing the collection work, participants returned to Bam-Bu-Ku for a free breakfast and a chance to finish the morning together.

Strong Participation From Local Sports Clubs

One of the defining features of the September clean-up was the involvement of local sports organisations.

Participants came from football, rhythmic gymnastics, basketball, futsal and swimming, among other sporting disciplines.

The organisers said the aim was to transfer the teamwork and shared responsibility associated with sport to the care of Ibiza's coastline.

The participation also brought together people who regularly take part in local sporting activities with other residents and volunteers involved in the environmental programme.

Cigarette Butts Remain a Persistent Problem

Among the waste found during the clean-up were cigarette butts, cans and vapes.

Cigarette butts were identified as one of the most difficult forms of litter to remove because they can become buried in the sand and are much harder to spot than larger objects.

Participants said they had to search through the sand to locate them, making a larger number of volunteers particularly useful during the collection.

The organisers did not yet have a final figure for the total amount of waste collected during the September 19 session.

Some Participants Found Less Litter

The overall impression among some returning volunteers was that the coastline appeared cleaner than in previous years.

Cristina Corrales, a volunteer who has taken part in earlier editions, said the area appeared relatively clean compared with previous clean-ups.

Her group mainly found cigarette butts, some cans and vapes.

She estimated that her group of around ten people filled approximately ten 30-litre rubbish bags during the morning.

That figure relates only to her group and should not be interpreted as the total amount collected across the entire clean-up.

Eight Years of Beach Clean-Ups

The programme dates back to 2018 and has now completed its eighth consecutive year.

Over that period, the initiative has brought together employees from O Beach Group, residents, visitors, families and sports teams connected with the group.

Previous clean-ups have involved collecting different types of waste, including plastics, cigarette butts and larger discarded objects.

The September event brought this year's programme to a close after a series of monthly activities during the summer.

The 2026 Programme

The 2026 programme consisted of four beach clean-ups, with the final event taking place on September 19.

The initiative was designed to take place regularly during the summer, encouraging people to contribute to the condition of the coastline while also raising awareness about waste in coastal areas.

Each session provided volunteers with an opportunity to participate directly in removing litter rather than simply raising awareness about the issue.

Support From Sant Antoni Town Hall

Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Hall supported the initiative through logistics, permits and promotion.

STAY OK Team also participated, providing volunteers and T-shirts for those taking part.

Local sports clubs formed an important part of the final event, reinforcing the community element of the initiative.

A Community-Focused Environmental Action

The clean-up programme has become a recurring collaboration between businesses, local institutions and members of the community.

The September 19 event again brought together people from different parts of Sant Antoni, with participants contributing their time to a shared environmental activity.

The organisers say the objective is to encourage greater awareness of the need to protect Ibiza's coastline and keep environmental responsibility connected with everyday community life.

The Final Session of 2026

The September clean-up concludes the O Beach Ibiza and Bam-Bu-Ku beach-cleaning programme for this summer.

Although the exact volume of waste collected has not yet been established, the 128 participants helped remove litter from the Sant Antoni coastline, with cigarette butts remaining one of the most noticeable and difficult forms of waste to collect.

The initiative will now return after the summer programme, having completed its eighth consecutive year of community beach clean-ups in Sant Antoni.
