The Ibiza Town Council has opened and notified two new administrative sanction proceedings related to animal abandonment, with each case carrying a proposed penalty of €10,000.01.

The new proceedings concern three dogs: two potentially dangerous dogs found abandoned in the Sa Joveria car park in April and a Pomeranian that was brought to the Sa Coma Animal Protection Centre in 2025.

With the two new cases, the council says 14 animal-abandonment sanction proceedings have now been registered in the municipality, representing a cumulative amount of €140,000.14.

Two Dogs Found at Sa Joveria

One of the new proceedings concerns Princesa and Marchena, two dogs classified as potentially dangerous breeds.

The dogs were found in the Sa Joveria car park on April 21, 2026, and were subsequently transferred to the Sa Coma Animal Protection Centre.

According to the Ayuntamiento, their previous owner did not have the required licence.

The two dogs were reported to be in good physical condition and remain at the centre while awaiting adoption.

Separate Case Involves a Pomeranian

The second proceeding concerns Gugu, a Pomeranian that arrived at the Sa Coma Animal Protection Centre on May 28, 2025.

The Ayuntamiento states that the person registered as the dog's microchip holder did not follow the legally established procedure in relation to the animal.

Following notification that the animal had been abandoned, the municipality initiated the corresponding administrative sanction procedure.

14 Proceedings Recorded

With these two new cases, the Ayuntamiento reports that there are now 14 animal-abandonment sanction proceedings registered in the municipality during the last year.

The cumulative amount associated with those proceedings is €140,000.14.

The figure should be understood as the total amount associated with the reported sanction proceedings, rather than necessarily meaning that every case has reached a final, unappealable penalty.

Legal Surrender Option Available

The Ayuntamiento has reminded residents that people who can no longer care for an animal can formally surrender it through the Sa Coma Animal Protection Centre.

The procedure provides an alternative to abandoning an animal and allows the centre to take responsibility for its care.

The council is encouraging owners who can no longer keep their pets to use the legal surrender process instead of leaving animals without care.

Adoption Measures in Ibiza

The municipality has also highlighted measures intended to facilitate the adoption of animals housed at Sa Coma.

During the current municipal term, the adoption fee has been set at zero euros, according to the Ayuntamiento.

The council has also doubled the surrender fee as part of its measures aimed at encouraging responsible ownership and discouraging abandonment.

Ayuntamiento Calls for Responsible Ownership

Ibiza's Councillor for Animal Welfare, Manuel Jiménez, said the latest proceedings form part of the municipality's efforts to combat animal abandonment and promote responsible pet ownership.

The two new cases bring renewed attention to the legal responsibilities of animal owners and the alternatives available when a person can no longer care for a pet.

For residents facing that situation, the municipality's message is that animals should be formally surrendered through the appropriate channels rather than abandoned.
