Former senator for Ibiza and Formentera Juanjo Ferrer is being discussed as a possible candidate to lead a united progressive list in Sant Antoni ahead of next year's municipal elections.

Ferrer, a lawyer and former Sant Antoni councillor, left the Senate in July after completing the agreed three-year term representing Ibiza and Formentera. His name has now emerged in discussions between progressive political forces on the island about possible joint candidacies for the 2027 municipal and island elections.

However, no candidacy has been formally confirmed, and Ferrer himself has not announced that he will stand.

Ferrer Says He Is Open to Helping

Asked about the possibility, Ferrer told Noudiari that he was not aware that his name was being considered as a consensus candidate.

He did not, however, rule out returning to frontline politics.

Ferrer said that if the different parties believed he could contribute and there was unity around the proposal, they could count on him.

His comments leave open the possibility of a return to local politics, but do not amount to an announcement of a candidacy.

A Return to Sant Antoni Politics

Ferrer has previous experience in Sant Antoni municipal government.

He served as a councillor for two consecutive terms, first between 2011 and 2015 with Es Nou Partit and subsequently from 2015 to 2017 with the PI.

He resigned partway through the second term, citing personal reasons at the time.

During his time at the town hall, Ferrer held several areas of responsibility, including Urban Planning, giving him previous experience within the municipality's administration.

Discussions Over a United Left Candidacy

His name has emerged as political groups on the left and centre-left discuss the possibility of presenting joint candidates at the next municipal elections.

According to the report, the discussions extend beyond Sant Antoni and form part of wider conversations about possible agreements between progressive forces across Ibiza.

The objective being discussed is to present united candidacies in some municipalities and for the Consell de Ibiza.

These negotiations remain ongoing and there is no confirmed island-wide agreement at this stage.

Sant Antoni Seen as a Key Municipality

Sant Antoni is one of the municipalities being discussed in connection with a possible change of government.

The PP currently controls all five municipal governments on Ibiza, as well as the Consell de Ibiza.

According to sources cited in the report, the possibility of a united progressive candidacy in Sant Antoni could continue to be explored even if a broader agreement covering the whole island is not ultimately reached.

His Recent Senate Role

Ferrer represented Ibiza and Formentera in the Senate after being elected in 2023 as part of the Eivissa i Formentera al Senat candidacy, which brought together PSOE, Sumar, Esquerra Unida and Ara Eivissa.

The official Senate record confirms that he was elected on July 23, 2023, and resigned his seat effective July 22, 2026. He was subsequently replaced by Neus Massanet.

The agreement behind the 2023 candidacy provided for Ferrer and his substitute to share the Senate representation during the legislature.

Issues Ferrer Focused On in Madrid

During his time in the Senate, Ferrer highlighted several issues affecting Ibiza and Formentera.

Among the matters he worked on were the constitutional reform establishing separate Senate representation for Ibiza and Formentera, island transport, the insularity allowance and housing.

Housing was also a significant part of his parliamentary activity, with Ferrer raising the issue of access to affordable housing in the Balearic Islands.

The claims about his parliamentary activity and achievements should be understood as matters highlighted by Ferrer and his political allies rather than as independent assessments of his record.

No Candidate Has Been Confirmed

For now, Ferrer's possible return to Sant Antoni politics remains dependent on negotiations between the different progressive formations.

There is no confirmed announcement that he will lead a united list, and there is no confirmed agreement establishing the composition or leadership of such a candidacy.

His own comments suggest he is open to participating if the political groups reach an agreement and believe he can contribute.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The next municipal elections will take place in 2027, making the coming months an important period for political parties to define candidates and possible electoral agreements.

In Sant Antoni, discussions about a united progressive candidacy are now bringing Ferrer's name back into consideration because of his previous experience in the municipality and his recent role representing Ibiza and Formentera in the Senate.

For now, however, the key point is that Juanjo Ferrer is a possible candidate under discussion, not an officially confirmed candidate.
