Armin van Buuren Explores the Psychology of the Dancefloor in New [UNVRS] Mini-Documentary

22 September 2026

Armin van Buuren has released a new mini-documentary exploring what happens emotionally and psychologically when thousands of people come together on a dancefloor.

Titled “The Psychology of the Dancefloor: An A State of Trance Documentary”, the approximately 10-minute film was created around his A State of Trance residency at [UNVRS] in Ibiza.

Rather than placing the DJ at the centre of the story, the documentary turns its attention towards the people on the dancefloor and the shared experience created by music.

Looking Beyond the DJ Booth

The film explores some of the questions surrounding collective experiences in electronic music.

Why can people who have never met feel connected during the same musical moment? Why can a particular section of a set trigger such a strong emotional response? And why can an experience shared with a crowd remain memorable long after the night is over?

Those questions form the basis of the documentary, which looks at the dancefloor from a psychological perspective.

Rachel Giddings Joins the Project

Armin van Buuren and his team worked with psychotherapist Rachel Giddings for the documentary.

Her involvement brings a psychological perspective to the experience of the crowd during Armin's extended performances.

The film looks at subjects including connections between strangers, emotional responses to music and the sense of belonging that can emerge when large numbers of people experience the same moment together.

The project is presented as an exploration of the dancefloor experience rather than a scientific study intended to establish definitive psychological or neurological effects.

The Audience Becomes the Focus

The modern club environment often places the DJ at the centre of attention, with much of the visual spectacle built around the performer.

This documentary deliberately changes that perspective.

The people on the other side of the DJ booth become the main subject, with the film examining how individual experiences can become collective when thousands of people respond to the same music at the same time.

For Armin, that shared experience is an important part of what makes a dancefloor significant.

Armin's Perspective

Speaking about the project, Armin said he found it fascinating to examine the dancefloor through a psychological lens during his five-hour shows.

He raised questions about why people can feel connected to complete strangers, why particular moments on the dancefloor can feel deeply emotional and why music can make people feel part of something larger than themselves.

His conclusion is that although the DJ is usually the visual focus of a club night, the experience itself is created by the people on the dancefloor.

The Documentary Comes From His Ibiza Residency

The project is closely connected to Armin's debut A State of Trance residency at [UNVRS].

The residency began on September 7 and is taking place every Monday through October 5.

Each of the five dates features a five-hour extended set from Armin, giving him considerably more time to build a longer musical journey than a conventional shorter club performance.

25 Years of A State of Trance

The residency also marks 25 years of A State of Trance.

The project began as a radio show in 2001 and has since developed into a global electronic music brand with an international audience.

Bringing the anniversary to Ibiza through five extended performances provides the setting for the documentary's central question: what happens when a large audience experiences that music together?

The Final Ibiza Dates

The documentary arrives as the residency enters its final weeks.

On Monday, September 28, Armin is scheduled to perform a B2B set with Funk Tribu, with Ginchy also joining the main programme.

The final date takes place on Monday, October 5, when Armin will perform his last extended set of the residency. Sarrah De Warren and Dan Harrison are scheduled to appear in Bunker that night.

The September 28 and October 5 dates are the two remaining A State of Trance events at [UNVRS] following the September 21 show.

Five Hours on the Dancefloor

The five-hour format is central to both the residency and the documentary.

Longer sets allow an artist to move through different phases of a performance gradually rather than relying entirely on the compressed structure of a shorter club appearance.

The documentary uses that environment to examine what is happening among the audience as the music develops over several hours.

A Different Perspective on Ibiza Club Culture

Ibiza has long been associated with the connection between electronic music, community and shared experiences.

“The Psychology of the Dancefloor” looks at that relationship from a perspective that is less concerned with the performer and more interested in the people experiencing the music together.

The result is a short film about the social and emotional side of club culture, using Armin's current Ibiza residency as its setting.

Watch the Documentary

“The Psychology of the Dancefloor: An A State of Trance Documentary” is available to watch online through Armin van Buuren's official YouTube channel.

The film runs for approximately 10 minutes and arrives during the final stage of his 2026 Ibiza residency.

For Armin van Buuren, the project adds another dimension to the 25th anniversary of A State of Trance, shifting the spotlight from the DJ booth to the people who make up the dancefloor.
