Ibiza Town is putting the Balearic Sea in the spotlight with a new outdoor photography exhibition in the heart of the city.

The travelling exhibition “Feim un capfico?” has arrived at the Passeig de Vara de Rey, bringing 32 award-winning photographs from the sixth edition of MARE FOTO to one of Ibiza's busiest public spaces.

The exhibition opened on Tuesday, September 22 and is currently scheduled to remain in Vara de Rey until October 15.

32 Images From the Balearic Sea

The exhibition brings together photographs exploring the biodiversity, landscapes and human relationship with the Balearic marine environment.

The images range from underwater wildlife and seascapes to photographs documenting the ways people use the sea and the pressures affecting marine ecosystems.

Each photograph is accompanied by explanatory material designed to provide more information about what can be found beneath the surface.

Nine Photographs Connected to Ibiza

Ibiza has a particularly strong presence in the exhibition.

Nine of the 32 photographs on display are directly linked to Ibiza and its surrounding waters.

Among the locations represented are the Posidonia meadows of Ses Salines, the underwater areas around Tagomago and the coastline surrounding Cala d'Hort and Es Vedrà.

That connection makes the exhibition particularly relevant to local residents and visitors familiar with these parts of the island.

From Tagomago to Cala d'Hort

Several of the photographs have a direct Ibiza story behind them.

“Túnel”, by Lluna Mas Escandell, was taken at Tagomago.

“El monstre”, by Vicent Guasch Juan, shows a major accumulation of plastic recorded at Cala d'Hort.

Another image, “Atrapada”, by Alex Postigo, shows a turtle caught in marine debris in the channel between Jávea and Ibiza.

The three works offer very different perspectives while highlighting both the natural environment and the pressures facing the sea.

Posidonia and Marine Life

The exhibition also introduces visitors to some of the species and habitats that form part of the Balearic marine environment.

Posidonia seagrass, jellyfish, squid and blue crab all feature among the subjects represented.

Other photographs focus on plastic and marine waste, showing how human activity can leave visible traces in the sea.

The result is an exhibition that combines nature photography with information about the marine environment.

MARE FOTO's Sixth Edition

The photographs were selected through the sixth edition of MARE FOTO, the Balearic marine conservation photography competition.

According to MARE's official records, 1,321 photographs were submitted during the 2025 edition from three participation groups: Expert Adults, Amateur Adults and Young Adults.

The competition included categories covering marine wildlife, marine plants, people and the sea, environmental impacts and the wider marine environment, alongside a public-choice award.

Bringing the Sea Into the City

The decision to install the exhibition in Vara de Rey brings an often unseen part of Ibiza directly into one of the city's most heavily used public spaces.

Much of Ibiza's marine biodiversity exists below the waterline and is not visible during everyday life in the city.

Displaying the photographs in the centre of Ibiza Town allows residents and visitors to encounter those landscapes without needing to go underwater themselves.

A Different Way to Discover Ibiza

For visitors, the exhibition offers another perspective on the island beyond beaches, restaurants and nightlife.

The photographs highlight places that many people recognise from above while revealing what exists beneath the surface.

Tagomago, Ses Salines, Cala d'Hort and Es Vedrà are presented not simply as coastal landmarks but as part of a wider marine ecosystem.

Photography With an Educational Purpose

“Feim un capfico?” is designed to combine strong visual imagery with accessible information.

The supporting texts explain the subjects shown in the photographs and provide context about the marine environment and the pressures affecting it.

MARE describes the wider project as bringing together photography, knowledge and community engagement around the conservation of the Balearic Sea.

The Exhibition Has Already Travelled Across the Islands

Ibiza is not the first stop for the 2026 touring exhibition.

Before arriving in Ibiza, “Feim un capfico?” was presented at several locations across Mallorca and Menorca and spent September 4 to 21 in Sant Francesc Xavier, Formentera.

After Ibiza, the published itinerary continues to Mallorca, with stops planned for Puerto Portals and Pollença.

The exhibition is therefore travelling across the Balearic Islands while bringing the winning images to different audiences.

A Focus on the Balearic Sea

The exhibition's central message is built around the idea of looking more closely at the sea surrounding the islands.

The images show marine life and underwater landscapes alongside photographs documenting pollution and other pressures.

Together, they present the Balearic Sea as both a place of exceptional biodiversity and an environment facing challenges that are visible in the photographs themselves.

The 2026 Ibiza Exhibition

Visitors can currently find “Feim un capfico?” along the Passeig de Vara de Rey in Ibiza Town.

The exhibition is scheduled to remain there until October 15, giving residents and visitors several weeks to explore the collection.

With 32 photographs covering marine life, underwater landscapes, human activity and environmental impacts, the exhibition provides a visual journey beneath the waters surrounding the Balearic Islands.

A Window Beneath the Surface
