Teachers working in Ibiza will receive an additional €300 per month during the 2026-2027 school year under a revised Balearic Government incentive designed to make difficult-to-fill teaching positions more attractive.

The increase was approved by the Balearic Government on Friday, September 18, as part of its updated framework for teaching posts classified as difficult or very difficult to cover.

The measure comes as Ibiza continues to face difficulties attracting and retaining teachers in certain specialities. The Government has classified 75 teaching specialities in Ibiza as difficult to cover for the new academic year.

The €300 monthly supplement

Teachers assigned to difficult-to-cover posts in Ibiza will receive €300 per month during the 2026-2027 academic year.

That represents an increase of €100 compared with the previous academic year.

The supplement is specifically linked to posts classified as difficult to cover. It is not a general €300 pay rise for every teacher working in Ibiza.

For teachers in Menorca, the supplement will rise from €100 to €200 per month.

Formentera remains under the higher “very difficult to cover” classification, with teachers in those posts continuing to receive €400 per month.

Ibiza has 75 difficult-to-cover specialities

The Government has classified 75 specialities in Ibiza as difficult to cover for 2026-2027.

Menorca has 43, while Formentera has 25 under the difficult-to-cover classification.

The classification is based on the availability of candidates. A teaching speciality is considered difficult to cover when there are five or fewer available applicants per post offered.

This distinction is important because the figure of 75 does not mean that exactly 75 teaching positions are currently empty.

It refers to specialities identified as having particular difficulties in finding available teachers.

What makes a post “difficult to cover”?

Under the new criteria, teaching posts whose main school is located in Ibiza or Menorca are classified as difficult-to-cover positions.

Formentera's posts retain the higher classification of very difficult to cover.

There is also a mechanism allowing certain Ibiza and Menorca posts to be upgraded to very difficult-to-cover status if they belong to a difficult-to-cover speciality and remain unfilled for 14 calendar days during the substitute-teacher allocation process.

The problem is not simply the number of vacancies

The Government's classification is intended to address difficulties in attracting teachers to particular island locations and specialities.

The issue can therefore involve both the number of available candidates and the ability to fill particular posts during the different allocation procedures.

The €300 supplement is intended to improve the attractiveness of these positions and help schools maintain more stable teaching teams.

Earlier allocation figures provide important context

The 75 difficult-to-cover specialities should not be confused with the number of unfilled posts at the start of the academic year.

In the first allocation process for 2026-2027, the Balearic Education Department offered 581 teaching posts in Ibiza and filled 503 of them.

That left 78 posts from that particular allocation process still to be addressed through subsequent procedures.

The Government subsequently opened further urgent allocation and substitute-teacher processes to continue filling vacancies.

The numbers therefore describe different things: 75 refers to difficult-to-cover specialities, while 581 and 503 refer to posts offered and filled in an earlier allocation process.

Ibiza receives the highest island supplement after Formentera

The new €300 payment places Ibiza between Formentera and Menorca in the Government's incentive structure.

The monthly supplements for 2026-2027 are:

• Ibiza: €300 for difficult-to-cover posts

• Menorca: €200 for difficult-to-cover posts

• Formentera: €400 for very difficult-to-cover posts

The Balearic Government says the revised amounts are intended to adapt the incentives to the actual recruitment difficulties faced by schools across the islands.

The measure follows earlier recruitment difficulties

The Government had already introduced additional financial incentives for difficult-to-cover teaching positions.

The 2026-2027 revision increases the Ibiza supplement by €100 compared with 2025-2026.

The aim is to encourage more teachers to accept posts in locations where the administration has identified persistent recruitment and retention difficulties.

Other teaching posts can receive a different supplement

The September 18 Government agreement also identifies certain teaching positions as having special working conditions involving factors such as difficult, hazardous or potentially toxic environments.

In Ibiza, the list includes teaching positions at IES Can Balo, the Aula Eivissa educational unit in the prison, and external teaching units including Es Puig des Bous and Tramuntana for minors under protection measures.

It also includes the Ibiza and Formentera branches of the Maria Antònia Pascual hospital and home education service.

These positions are covered under a separate category and should not be confused with the €300 difficult-coverage supplement.

The Government says the goal is stable school staffing

The Balearic Education Department says the revised framework is intended to help guarantee that teaching vacancies can be filled and to provide greater stability for school staff.

The problem is particularly relevant in the islands where recruiting professionals can be more difficult than in Mallorca.

The Government says identifying the problematic specialities in advance allows it to apply targeted incentives rather than treating every teaching position in the same way.

What the €300 payment does and does not mean

The new supplement represents a concrete financial incentive for teachers taking eligible posts in Ibiza.

It does not mean every teacher on the island will receive an additional €300 each month.

It also does not mean Ibiza has exactly 75 vacant teaching positions.

The confirmed figure is that 75 teaching specialities have been classified as difficult to cover for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The classification is based on recruitment difficulty, with five or fewer available candidates per post used as the key threshold.

Ibiza's teacher recruitment challenge continues

The new payment comes as the Education Department continues its different recruitment and substitute-teacher allocation procedures for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The Government's earlier figures show that the majority of teaching posts offered in Ibiza were already allocated during the first process, while subsequent procedures were designed to address remaining vacancies.

The latest measure therefore represents an attempt to tackle the more persistent recruitment problem behind specific specialities rather than a simple response to 75 vacant classrooms.

For the 2026-2027 school year, the clearest confirmed change is the increase in the difficult-coverage supplement for Ibiza teachers to €300 per month.
