Mediterranean Sea Hits Record 28.54°C in August as Ibiza and Formentera Face an Exceptionally Warm Sea

The Mediterranean Sea reached an extraordinary temperature of 28.54°C on August 13, 2026, setting a new record for the entire basin and confirming that this summer has been exceptionally warm at sea.

According to Spain's State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, the average surface temperature across the Mediterranean reached 28.54°C on August 13. It was the highest value recorded in the comparable AEMET series dating back to at least 1940.

The record is particularly significant for Ibiza and Formentera, which sit in the western Mediterranean and have experienced an exceptionally hot summer both on land and at sea.

It is important to note that the 28.54°C figure is a Mediterranean-wide average. It does not mean that the water surrounding Ibiza or Formentera reached exactly 28.54°C on that day.

August Produced Record After Record

AEMET said the August record was not an isolated spike.

During practically the whole month, daily Mediterranean sea temperatures repeatedly reached new records, creating a prolonged period of exceptionally warm conditions.

The situation had already become unusual by late June. At that point, Mediterranean surface waters were around 2.6°C above normal for the time of year, with temperatures more typical of the second half of August.

That meant the sea had effectively reached its usual seasonal peak much earlier than expected.

For an island destination such as Ibiza, where the surrounding sea plays a major role in tourism, the environment and the local climate, this prolonged warmth is particularly notable.

July Was Already a Record-Breaker

The extraordinary August temperatures followed an already exceptional July.

Mercator Ocean International, which analyses marine conditions using Copernicus data and other observations, reported that July 2026 was the warmest July on record for the Mediterranean.

The basin recorded a mean sea surface temperature of 27.07°C during July, surpassing the previous July record of 26.68°C set in 2025.

Mercator Ocean also reported that 94% of the Mediterranean showed above-average sea surface temperatures during July, while 79% of the basin experienced intense marine heatwave conditions for at least one day.

The western Mediterranean was among the areas showing particularly strong anomalies.

What Does Exceptionally Warm Water Mean for Ibiza?

For visitors, warmer sea temperatures may initially sound like good news.

Warm Mediterranean water can make swimming, paddleboarding, snorkelling and boating particularly pleasant, especially later into the season.

But very high sea temperatures are also an indicator of accumulated heat in the marine environment.

The sea acts as a huge reservoir of energy, absorbing heat over prolonged periods. When temperatures remain unusually high for weeks rather than days, the consequences can extend beyond the experience of people swimming at the beach.

Marine ecosystems are particularly sensitive to prolonged thermal stress.

Posidonia and Marine Ecosystems Under Pressure

The waters surrounding Ibiza and Formentera are home to extensive meadows of Posidonia oceanica, an important Mediterranean seagrass that plays a major role in the health of coastal ecosystems.

Posidonia provides habitat for marine organisms, contributes to water clarity and helps protect coastlines from erosion.

The exceptionally warm conditions reported across the Mediterranean therefore raise concerns about the additional thermal pressure placed on marine ecosystems.

However, it is important to distinguish between a basin-wide temperature record and specific local ecological impacts.

The record of 28.54°C does not by itself demonstrate that Ibiza's Posidonia meadows have suffered a particular level of damage. Local conditions, water depth, currents and other environmental factors all influence the actual temperatures experienced by individual marine habitats.

Warmer Seas and Autumn Weather

Another concern associated with unusually warm seas is their role in the atmosphere.

Warm water can provide additional heat and moisture to the atmosphere. When the right atmospheric conditions develop, this can contribute to the energy available for intense rainfall events.

That does not mean that a warm Mediterranean automatically causes a DANA or torrential rain event.

Such weather systems depend on a combination of factors, including atmospheric instability, moisture, upper-level dynamics and the position of weather systems.

Nevertheless, exceptionally warm sea temperatures can be an important ingredient when heavy autumn rainfall develops around the Mediterranean.

For the Balearic Islands, that makes the coming transition from summer into autumn particularly important from a weather-monitoring perspective.

A Record That Puts the Summer Into Context

The new sea temperature record is part of a broader pattern of unusual heat in 2026.

The Mediterranean was already running substantially warmer than normal at the beginning of summer, and July subsequently became the warmest July on record for the basin.

By August, the exceptional warmth had continued rather than fading.

The sequence is notable because marine heat tends to accumulate gradually. Unlike a short heatwave over land, the ocean can remain unusually warm for extended periods once large quantities of heat have been stored in the upper layers.

That helps explain why the Mediterranean continued breaking temperature records through much of August.

Why Ibiza's Sea Can Feel Different From the Basin Average

A Mediterranean-wide average should not be confused with the temperature measured at an individual Ibiza beach.

Sea temperatures around the Pitiüses can vary depending on location, wind, currents, depth, exposure and local circulation.

A shallow sheltered cove can therefore feel considerably warmer than open water, while conditions offshore can differ from those along the coast.

For this reason, the 28.54°C figure is best understood as a measure of the extraordinary warmth affecting the Mediterranean as a whole rather than a precise temperature reading for Ibiza.

The latest figures add another chapter to the growing body of evidence showing that Mediterranean marine conditions are becoming increasingly unusual.

The record observed by AEMET and the separate July findings from Mercator Ocean International were produced using different datasets and methodologies, but they point in the same direction: the Mediterranean experienced exceptional warmth during the summer of 2026.

That matters for Ibiza and Formentera because the sea is central to almost every aspect of island life.

Tourism, fisheries, marine habitats, coastal conditions and weather are all closely connected to the surrounding waters.

The Sea Around Ibiza Is Part of the Island's Identity

For Ibiza and Formentera, the Mediterranean is far more than scenery.

It is the foundation of the islands' beaches and bays, supports marine ecosystems and shapes the climate that attracts millions of visitors.

A record such as 28.54°C therefore has significance beyond the number itself.

It illustrates how quickly the marine environment can move into exceptional territory and highlights the importance of continuing to monitor sea temperatures and marine ecosystems as the year progresses.

The record was reached on August 13, but the broader story is the persistence of unusually warm water throughout the summer.
