The new direct Ibiza–New York route launching in 2027 will offer passengers more than simply a faster way to reach the United States. United Airlines plans to operate the service with its new Airbus A321XLR, bringing a significantly upgraded premium experience to the island’s first-ever nonstop connection with the US.

A New Level of Premium Travel to Ibiza

United's new A321XLR is designed to deliver a more premium long-haul experience despite being a single-aisle aircraft.

The aircraft will feature United Polaris suites with privacy doors, giving Business Class passengers a more private space during the transatlantic journey. The premium cabin also includes enhanced seating and updated onboard technology.

Passengers will also have access to 4K OLED entertainment screens and Bluetooth connectivity, while United says MileagePlus members will be able to use Starlink Wi-Fi at no additional cost.

For passengers travelling in Economy, the new aircraft will also introduce improvements, including a refreshment area and new Economy Plus seating with additional elbow room.

Four Flights a Week From Ibiza

The new service between Ibiza Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport is scheduled to begin on May 31, 2027.

United will operate four flights per week during the summer season, creating Ibiza's first direct air connection with the United States.

The route is part of United's largest international expansion in its history, with the airline announcing 10 new international destinations for 2027, including Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille, Olbia, Catania, Ljubljana, Toulouse, Terceira, Luxembourg City and Okinawa.

The A321XLR Is the Star of the Route

The choice of aircraft is particularly important.

The Airbus A321XLR gives United the ability to operate long-haul routes to destinations that may not generate enough demand for larger wide-body aircraft.

For Ibiza, that makes the direct New York connection possible while offering passengers a newer aircraft with a more sophisticated cabin.

United is also using the A321XLR to replace some of its older Boeing 757 aircraft on international routes. The airline expects sufficient deliveries of the new aircraft to support its ambitious 2027 European expansion.

Ibiza Is Attracting More American Travellers

The decision to launch the route reflects growing interest from the US market.

According to Ibiza Council figures cited by Forbes, American visitors represented more than 5% of Ibiza's international tourists between April and October 2025.

Even more strikingly, there were nearly five million searches from the United States for travel to Ibiza between January and June 2026, representing a substantial increase compared with the same period a year earlier.

United says it has also observed significant interest from American travellers who previously flew to Mallorca and then continued to Ibiza or Formentera.

The new route removes that extra connection completely.

A More Premium Image for Ibiza

The upgraded aircraft also fits neatly with Ibiza's push toward a higher-value tourism model.

The island has increasingly been trying to move away from simply increasing visitor numbers and instead attract travellers who spend more on accommodation, restaurants, experiences and premium services.

A direct transatlantic flight with a modern Business Class product could support that strategy by making Ibiza more accessible to affluent American travellers.

The Hotel Business Federation of Ibiza and Formentera (FEHIF) has welcomed the new route, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen Ibiza and Formentera's position in the North American market and diversify the islands' tourism sources.

Ibiza Joins a Growing Transatlantic Network

The new route will also add another direct connection between the Balearic Islands and North America.

United already operates a Newark–Palma de Mallorca service, while Air Canada launched a Palma–Montreal route this season.

The Ibiza–Newark service will therefore become the third direct air link between North America and the Balearic Islands established in recent years.

For Ibiza, however, the difference is significant: travellers will finally be able to fly nonstop from New York directly to the island, rather than connecting through another European or Spanish airport.

More Than Just a New Flight

The significance of the route goes beyond the four weekly flights themselves.

It combines direct US connectivity, a new-generation long-haul aircraft and an upgraded premium cabin, giving Ibiza a stronger position in the increasingly competitive market for luxury and high-value international tourism.

From May 31, 2027, American travellers will be able to leave the New York area and arrive directly in Ibiza — while passengers in Ibiza will have a new nonstop gateway into the United States.

And they will be doing it aboard one of United's newest and most premium aircraft.
