Un Largo Viaje Brings an Inclusive Short Film to Ibiza with Young Star Sofía Rumenova

1 October 2026

A short film created around inclusion, travel and the unexpected encounters that can happen on the road will be presented in Ibiza this Saturday, October 3.

Un Largo Viaje will be screened at Sa Peixateria in Ibiza Town at 19:00, with members of the film's creative and production team attending the presentation.

At the centre of the story is Sofía Rumenova, a young actress with Down syndrome who was 10 years old when the film was made.

The project brings together a road movie, a classic Seat 600 and a journey from Valencia to Ibiza, while placing inclusion at the centre of its story.

A road movie with Ibiza at its heart

Un Largo Viaje is approximately 25 to 30 minutes long.

The story begins in Valencia, where two friends set off on a journey accompanied by a young girl with Down syndrome. The road eventually takes them to Ibiza, where the island becomes an important part of the story.

The production combines the journey itself with elements of Ibiza's culture and traditions.

According to Ana Escandell, one of the film's actresses and producers, the island is not simply used as the final destination. Several references to Ibiza have been incorporated into the story, including sobrasada and scenes involving ball pagès.

Sofía became the centre of the project

The idea for the film came from two separate creative ideas coming together.

The director wanted to make a road movie, while Escandell wanted to work with a child with Down syndrome.

The production team subsequently searched for a suitable young actress in Ibiza, Formentera and Valencia before casting Sofía Rumenova.

Escandell has described Sofía as one of the major discoveries of the production, praising her enthusiasm for acting and her experience during filming.

Sofía already had experience performing in theatre before taking part in the short film.

A classic Seat 600 plays a major role

The car itself is an important character in the story.

An old Seat 600, inherited from the family of one of the production members, became the setting for much of the road movie.

The vehicle was used throughout the story as the characters travelled between Valencia and Ibiza.

The production had to deal with the practical difficulties of filming inside such a small classic car, while outdoor scenes were also affected by poor weather during the filming period.

Filmed between Valencia and Ibiza

The filming took place between Valencia and Ibiza in October 2025.

The production included several exterior scenes on Ibiza, giving the island a significant role in the finished film.

The team also had to contend with several days of poor weather during the shoot, coinciding with a period of heavy rain associated with a DANA affecting the islands at the time.

The earlier production announcement also confirmed that the film was designed as an inclusive project centred on themes of overcoming obstacles and optimism.

Inclusion beyond the screen

For the filmmakers, the project is intended to demonstrate that people with Down syndrome should have opportunities to participate in audiovisual productions.

Escandell has spoken particularly strongly about the importance of opening the film industry to actors with Down syndrome.

Her experience working with Sofía has reinforced that view, with the actress and producer describing the young performer as someone who brought a great deal to the production.

Those comments reflect the filmmakers' experience of working with Sofía and their broader message about inclusion. They are not a prediction about her future career.

The film has already begun its journey

The Ibiza presentation is not the film's first public screening.

According to Escandell, Un Largo Viaje has already had a small presentation in Valencia and has begun its festival journey.

The production team has also received proposals to explore expanding the story into a longer project, although that does not mean a feature-length version has been formally confirmed.

See Un Largo Viaje in Ibiza

The Ibiza presentation takes place on Saturday, October 3 at 19:00 at Sa Peixateria in Ibiza Town.

The event will include members of the technical and production team, giving audiences an opportunity to hear more about how the short film was made and the ideas behind its inclusive approach.

For Ibiza, the screening also brings a locally connected production back to the island where part of its story and filming took place.

At its centre is a simple road-trip story that uses travel, friendship and an unexpected journey to explore inclusion and the possibilities that can open up when people are given the opportunity to participate.
