Fred again.. Says AI Cannot Replace the Creative Process Behind Making Music

September 27, 2026

Fred again.. has spoken publicly about artificial intelligence in music, explaining why he has no desire to use AI as part of his own creative process.

The British DJ and producer shared his thoughts in a series of Instagram Stories on September 25, revisiting notes he had written on his phone around a year earlier.

Rather than describing the debate simply as AI-generated music versus human-made music, Fred again.. argued that the real alternative to AI music is the act of making music itself.

“The Process Is the Magic”

Fred again.. wrote that he has been thinking about the idea for some time and suggested that the opposite of AI music may not simply be “human music”, but “making music”.

For the producer, the process of developing an idea, experimenting with sounds and gradually arriving at a finished piece is a fundamental part of why he makes music.

He described the creative process as a form of meditation and said he places a significant part of his identity in it.

Because of that, he said he has felt no desire to experiment with AI music.

Why He Does Not Want to Hand Over the Process

Fred again.. explained that giving part of the creative process to a machine would conflict with what he enjoys about making music.

His argument is therefore primarily about the value he places on the creative journey rather than a detailed position on issues such as copyright, AI training datasets or artist compensation.

He described the process of repeatedly working towards an idea, including the uncertainty and mistakes involved, as something creators are fortunate to experience.

For him, the time spent trying to create something that does not yet exist is part of the point.

His Comments Are Personal

The producer's remarks should not be interpreted as a call for other musicians to stop using AI.

He was explaining why he personally does not feel drawn towards using it in his own music-making process.

He also acknowledged that he has concerns about things AI could threaten, while making clear that the creative process itself is not something he believes the technology will take away from him.

That makes his comments different from arguments focused specifically on copyright, licensing, training data or the economic impact of AI-generated music.

A Growing Debate in Electronic Music

Fred again.. joins a growing number of prominent electronic artists who have publicly discussed the impact of AI on music.

Skrillex and Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk have also expressed reservations about aspects of AI and creative work, although their arguments and areas of concern are not identical.

The wider music industry continues to debate how AI-generated music should be treated, including questions around copyright, consent, attribution and the economic value of human creativity.

Fred again..'s latest comments add another perspective to that discussion: the argument that the process of making music has value in itself, regardless of how quickly a finished track can be produced.

Fred again.. Continues His Own Creative Work

The comments come during an active period for the producer.

Fred again.. has continued his USB002 project internationally and recently recorded a set in Mexico City with LATIN MAFIA.

He is also among the artists contributing to the soundtrack for the upcoming video game Grand Theft Auto VI, alongside artists including PinkPantheress and Étienne de Crécy.

For Fred again.., however, his comments about AI return to the same principle: the experimentation, mistakes and gradual development involved in creating music remain an important part of the experience he values.
