After Spain’s Wildfires, Protecting the Soil Becomes the Next Challenge
September 23, 2026
Spain is facing another stage of its difficult 2026 wildfire season: protecting the land left behind after the flames have gone.
More than 250,000 hectares of forest land had been affected by fires by mid-August, according to Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. The ministry's later provisional data continues to show the scale of the damage, with figures being updated as information from the autonomous communities is incorporated.
Now, as autumn approaches, attention is turning to what happens beneath the burned landscape.
The first significant rains can create a new risk for areas where vegetation has been destroyed: soil erosion.
Why the soil is vulnerable after a wildfire
A wildfire does more than remove trees, shrubs and other vegetation.
The fire can also alter the properties of the soil, while the loss of vegetation removes an important natural layer of protection.
Once the ground is exposed, rainfall can run across the surface more easily, carrying soil, ash and organic material downhill.
The risk is particularly important on steep slopes and soils that are naturally vulnerable to erosion.
Spanish post-fire restoration guidance identifies soil conservation and water regulation as fundamental objectives after a fire. It notes that the removal of vegetation can increase runoff and erosion, with the potential for longer-term degradation if soil is lost.
The autumn rain is a critical moment
The timing is particularly important in Mediterranean environments.
Large wildfires often occur during the dry summer months, leaving extensive areas with little vegetation cover just as autumn brings the possibility of heavier rainfall.
Research and restoration guidance for southern Europe identifies the period immediately following summer fires as a particularly important window for soil protection.
Measures designed to reduce erosion therefore need to be considered before intense autumn rainfall reaches vulnerable burned areas.
How can burned land be protected?
There is no single solution for every burned landscape.
The appropriate response depends on factors including the severity of the fire, the type of soil, the slope, vegetation recovery and the likelihood of heavy rainfall.
Possible post-fire measures include spreading organic mulch, using branches or logs to slow water movement, supporting vegetation recovery and, where appropriate, seeding.
Organic mulch can provide a temporary protective layer over exposed soil, helping reduce the impact of raindrops and surface runoff.
On particularly vulnerable slopes, barriers made from woody material can also help slow water and trap sediment.
Natural recovery is also part of the process
Not every burned area requires the same level of intervention.
Vegetation can naturally regenerate after fire, and restoration decisions need to take local conditions into account.
The priority is to identify areas where the risk of erosion is greatest and where intervention can prevent significant loss of soil before vegetation has had time to recover.
Research on Mediterranean ecosystems has highlighted the importance of vegetation cover in reducing post-fire erosion and the particular vulnerability of burned landscapes to autumn rainfall.
Spain's 2026 wildfire season
The scale of the 2026 fires has made post-fire recovery a significant national issue.
By 17 August, MITECO had recorded 254,730 hectares of forest land affected by fires, including more than 223,000 hectares attributed to large forest fires of more than 500 hectares. The figures were provisional and based on information supplied by Spain's autonomous communities, supplemented by European EFFIS data.
MITECO subsequently introduced an interactive wildfire information system that is updated as new regional information becomes available.
Its September data identifies the Niebla fire in Huelva, Burgohondo in Ávila and La Mierla in Guadalajara among the largest fires recorded in the 2026 series so far. The ministry stresses that the figures remain provisional and can change as official data is incorporated or fire perimeters are revised.
The work continues after the flames
The end of a wildfire does not necessarily mean the end of its environmental impact.
For the areas that have burned, the next stage involves assessing the condition of the soil, identifying erosion risks and determining where active protection or restoration is required.
That work becomes particularly important before periods of heavy rainfall.
For Spain, the coming autumn therefore represents an important phase in the recovery from one of the country's most demanding wildfire seasons in recent years.
The immediate challenge is no longer simply putting out the flames. In many burned areas, it is preventing the loss of the soil that remains.
