Hospital de Formentera Opens New Solar Installation to Cover Almost 20% of Its Electricity Demand

October 05, 2026

Hospital de Formentera has put a new photovoltaic installation into operation that is expected to cover close to 20% of the hospital's electricity demand and save around €30,000 a year on its energy bill.

The new solar installation, located in the hospital's car park, was officially inaugurated on Monday, October 5, as part of the Balearic Government's programme to expand renewable energy generation at public buildings.

More Than 150 MWh of New Solar Energy

The new photovoltaic installation is expected to generate more than 150 MWh of electricity each year.

That production will complement the hospital's existing photovoltaic installation, which generates approximately 55 MWh annually.

Together, the two installations are therefore expected to produce more than 205 MWh of solar electricity each year, reducing the hospital's need to purchase electricity from the grid.

The distinction is important: the figure of more than 205 MWh refers to the combined production of the new and existing installations, rather than the output of the new system alone.

Solar Panels Installed Over the Car Park

The new installation has been built in the hospital's parking area.

As well as generating renewable electricity for the hospital, the photovoltaic panels provide shade for parked vehicles, giving the project an additional practical benefit.

The installation operates as an individual self-consumption system serving Hospital de Formentera. The electricity generated is used by the hospital to meet part of its own energy requirements.

Around €30,000 in Annual Savings

The Balearic Government estimates that the installation will reduce the hospital's electricity bill by approximately €30,000 per year.

The project therefore combines two objectives: increasing the use of renewable energy within the public health system and reducing operating costs.

Balearic Energy and Enterprise Minister Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro highlighted the expected reduction in electricity costs during his visit to the hospital for the inauguration.

Part of a Wider Public Solar Programme

The Formentera project forms part of a wider programme being developed by the Govern de les Illes Balears through the Institut Balear de l'Energia (IBE).

The programme focuses on installing photovoltaic panels on the roofs and car parks of public buildings, allowing existing spaces to be used for renewable-energy generation without requiring additional land.

Other projects mentioned as part of the programme include installations at Hospital d'Inca, the IB3 headquarters and IES Marratxí.

Supporting Renewable Energy at Hospital de Formentera

The new installation increases the amount of electricity that Hospital de Formentera can generate locally from solar power.

With more than 150 MWh of additional annual production expected from the new installation, combined photovoltaic generation at the hospital is projected to exceed 205 MWh per year.

The project also means that part of the hospital's electricity consumption can be supplied directly through its own solar generation, reducing its dependence on electricity purchased from the grid.

For Formentera, the installation represents another step towards greater renewable-energy use in public infrastructure, while also providing an estimated €30,000 annual saving and additional shade in the hospital car park.
