Ibiza Expects Two New ITV Inspection Units at Montecristo to Open Within Five Months

October 03, 2026

Ibiza's Consell expects two new units for vehicle roadworthiness inspections to begin operating within five months, as work advances at the Montecristo industrial estate in the municipality of Sant Antoni.

The additional units are being introduced to increase the island's ITV inspection capacity by around 30,000 inspections a year and help reduce waiting times for motorists.

The Consell announced the latest timetable on Saturday, October 3, following a visit to the site by Mobility Councillor Mariano Juan, Island Director of Transport Roberto Algaba and representatives of the company contracted to operate the service.

Construction is still at the foundation stage

The two new units are currently under construction at the Montecristo industrial estate.

According to the Consell, the works are presently in the excavation phase for the foundations. This means the five-month timeframe is a projected opening target rather than a confirmed operational date.

The facilities will be operated by Estación ITV Vega Baja, S.A., known as ITEVEBASA, under the contract awarded by the Consell earlier this year.

The contract has a budget of €1.46 million and an initial duration of one year, with the possibility of extensions.

Around 30,000 additional inspections each year

Once operational, the two additional units are expected to provide capacity for around 30,000 more inspections annually.

The service will handle periodic vehicle inspections as well as inspections prior to vehicle registration and certain technical-document procedures, including duplicate documentation.

The Consell says the additional capacity is intended particularly to ease pressure on the existing Santa Gertrudis ITV station.

Ibiza's existing ITV service

At present, the island's public ITV service operates through the fixed station at Santa Gertrudis and the mobile ITV unit at the Ibiza Exhibition Centre.

The Consell's current ITV appointment system lists Santa Gertrudis on the Sant Miquel road and the mobile unit at the Recinto Ferial in Ibiza.

The new Montecristo units will therefore add inspection capacity rather than replace either of the existing services.

Waiting times have been a longstanding issue

The additional units were originally awarded in May 2026 as a response to lengthy waiting times.

At that time, the Consell said the two additional lines could provide close to 30,000 extra inspections annually. The contract was awarded to ITEVEBASA for €1.46 million, excluding VAT, with an initial one-year term that could be extended.

Earlier procurement documents described the pressure on the ITV system as substantial, with waiting times having risen considerably in the years before the additional capacity was commissioned.

A separate change is also planned for Ibiza's ITV system

The Montecristo project should not be confused with another change to the island's ITV system.

In May, the Consell approved a regulatory framework allowing private companies to apply for authorisation to establish their own ITV stations on Ibiza.

That is a separate process from the public contract awarded to ITEVEBASA for the two additional Montecristo units.

The Montecristo units are being provided through a Consell contract, while the separate regulatory change establishes a framework for potential privately operated ITV stations.

The aim is to reduce waiting times

Mariano Juan said the immediate objective is to increase inspection capacity, reduce waiting times and provide a more efficient service for motorists.

The additional 30,000 annual inspections are expected to provide extra capacity once the units are fully operational.

For motorists currently waiting for appointments, however, the improvement will depend on the construction being completed and the new units actually entering service.

Five months is a target, not yet a confirmed opening date

The Consell's latest announcement puts the expected opening within five months, but the units are still being constructed.

With excavation for the foundations currently underway, the exact date on which motorists will be able to book inspections at Montecristo has not yet been announced.

For now, the important development is that the project has moved into the construction phase and the island is working towards adding approximately 30,000 inspections of annual capacity.
