Pompas Fúnebres Ibiza is entering a new chapter this week with the opening of its new facilities in Es Gorg and the arrival of a fourth generation of the family into the day-to-day leadership of the business.

The new facility represents an investment of around €3 million, according to company manager Ana Marí, who has led the business since 1999. Her son, 27-year-old Adrián Valencia Marí, is now taking responsibility for the day-to-day running of the new premises and represents the fourth generation of the family business.

A private inauguration is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, with the facilities due to begin serving the public normally from Friday, October 2.

A New 1,000-Square-Metre Facility

The new premises in Es Gorg cover approximately 1,000 square metres across two floors.

The facility has five rooms in total. Four are designed as viewing rooms, while the fifth is a dedicated ceremony room that can also be converted into a premium viewing room.

The ceremony room is separated from the other spaces and opens onto a private terrace, providing an alternative setting for families who prefer a civil farewell rather than a church ceremony.

Three of the viewing rooms on the upper floor also have interior terraces that bring natural light into the spaces.

Designed to Feel More Like Home

One of the central ideas behind the new facility is to make the environment more comfortable and less institutional for families.

Each room has a more private area for the deceased and a separate space for relatives and friends. The rooms include sofas, a coffee machine, a refrigerator and storage for coats and other belongings.

Ana Marí says the aim is to recreate some of the feeling of the traditional home wake, when families would gather around a deceased relative in their own house.

A communal café area has also been created on the ground floor, offering families and visitors a place to sit outside the viewing rooms.

Ibiza Is Built Into the Design

The new building has been designed with a distinctly Ibicencan aesthetic.

Natural stone and white dominate the interiors and exterior, while photographs of places around Ibiza, local ceramic pieces and books about the island are incorporated throughout the facility.

Each room has also been given an Ibicencan name.

The landscaping includes bougainvillea, orange trees and two olive trees, elements Ana Marí says were missing from the company's previous public-facing facilities.

Bringing the Public Services Together

One of the biggest practical changes for families is the centralisation of services.

Until now, funeral arrangements were made at the company's office on Calle Aragón in Ibiza Town, while the public viewing facilities were located at the Can Negre industrial estate.

The new Es Gorg premises bring the offices and public viewing services together in a single location, closer to Ibiza Town and within walking distance of the centre. There is also parking available in the wider Es Gorg area.

The Calle Aragón office will no longer operate as a public point of attention.

The previous Can Negre facility will remain in use internally for work associated with the company's operations, but it will no longer provide public viewing services.

An Important Distinction Between the New Facility and the Technical Operations

The move also follows a distinction that Ana Marí explained in an October 2025 interview.

The company's technical tanatopraxy and preparation facilities were planned to remain at Blanca Dona, while the public-facing viewing and office functions would move to Es Gorg.

In that earlier interview, Marí described the Es Gorg project as a major investment intended to improve the service offered to families rather than simply increase business volume.

The current opening therefore represents the relocation of the public-facing part of the operation, while technical work continues under a separate arrangement.

Around 40 Employees

Pompas Fúnebres Ibiza now has a workforce of close to 40 people.

The company has also added a human resources manager as part of its growth.

Like many businesses operating in Ibiza, the funeral sector faces difficulties finding staff, according to Ana Marí. She has asked for some patience during the first days of the move as the teams adapt to bringing together activities that previously operated from separate locations.

Nearly Three Million Euros Invested

The Es Gorg project represents an investment of approximately €3 million, according to Marí.

She says the investment will not result in higher prices for customers, with the objective instead being to improve the service and provide families with more comfortable facilities.

The company says the new premises are intended to be an investment in the future of the business and the quality of the service it provides.

A Family Business Spanning Four Generations

The story of Pompas Fúnebres Ibiza goes back through four generations of the Marí family.

The business began with Vicente Marí, followed by his son Juan and then José Luis Marí.

In 1999, José Luis transferred management of the company to his daughter, Ana Marí, who has now spent 27 years at the helm.

Her son Adrián Valencia Marí is now entering the fourth generation.

Adrián joined the company at just 16 years old and initially worked in the most hands-on areas of the profession, including collections, preparations and funerals.

He will now take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the new Es Gorg premises.

The Family's Role in Ibiza's Funeral Sector

According to the family history described by Noudiari, José Luis Marí and his brother were pioneers in opening one of the first funeral homes in Spain in Ibiza in 1985.

At the time, holding wakes at home was still the traditional practice for many families.

The development of professional funeral facilities marked an important change in how funerals were organised on the island, and the family has remained in the sector through successive generations.

The company's own website currently describes the business as having more than 50 years of experience accompanying families in Ibiza and Formentera.

Civil Ceremonies Are Growing

The new ceremony room is one of the most notable additions to the Es Gorg facility.

Ana Marí says Ibiza remains traditionally linked to church funerals, while civil ceremonies are particularly requested by foreign residents who may have a smaller circle of relatives and friends on the island.

The separate ceremony space gives families another option and can also be converted into a premium viewing room when required.

Thursday Inauguration, Friday Opening

The official inauguration will take place on Thursday, October 1, in an invitation-only event.

The programme includes a blessing by the Bishop of Ibiza, Vicente Ribas, a presentation using archive photographs from the 1920s through the 1950s, a speech by Ana Marí, a small reception and guided visits in groups.

Institutional representatives, suppliers, industry contacts and the company's employees have been invited.

The public will be able to use the new facilities from Friday, October 2.

The company is not planning a conventional open-door event, with Marí explaining that the purpose of a facility like this is to provide support to families at moments of bereavement rather than operate as a conventional public attraction.

Updating the Company's Public Information

The move also means the company will need to update its public-facing information.

As of September 30, Pompas Fúnebres Ibiza's website still lists its office on Calle Aragón and its viewing and funeral facilities at Can Negre, while the new Es Gorg location is being prepared for its October opening.

The company says updating its website and Google information is among its immediate priorities so families are directed to the correct location once the move is operational.

Looking to the Future

For Ana Marí, the new facility represents much more than a change of address.

After 27 years managing the company, she is now seeing her son take over a greater role and the family business move into its fourth generation.

For Adrián, who has spent more than a decade working inside the company, the transition represents the next stage of a business in which his own life has closely followed its development.

The new Es Gorg premises are designed to bring together the public-facing side of the business, offer more space and comfort for families and create a facility that reflects Ibiza in its architecture and design.

For Pompas Fúnebres Ibiza, it is both a move into a new building and a generational handover taking place at the same time.

And from Friday, October 2, the new Es Gorg facility will become the company's main public-facing location for families needing its services.
