Ibiza and Formentera Generate More Than €1 Billion in Tourist Spending During August

October 03, 2026

Ibiza and Formentera generated more than €1 billion in tourist spending during August 2026, with visitors to the two islands spending a combined €1.018 billion during the month.

Provisional figures from the Institut d'Estadística de les Illes Balears (IBESTAT) show that 699,937 tourists visited Ibiza and Formentera in August, while total tourist expenditure reached €1.018 billion.

Spending increased more quickly than the number of visitors, highlighting the continued growth in tourist expenditure during the peak summer month.

Tourist spending reaches €1.018 billion

The €1.018 billion recorded in August represents a 6.76% increase compared with August 2025.

Average spending reached €1,454.66 per tourist over the course of the trip.

Daily spending stood at €243.45 per person, an increase of 8.8% compared with the same month last year.

The daily figure was the highest recorded among the Balearic Islands, ahead of Mallorca at €219.66 and Menorca at €169.45.

The figures are consistent with the broader national tourism-spending data, which showed that international tourists spent €17.838 billion across Spain during August, with average daily spending reaching €202.

Nearly 700,000 tourists visited the Pitiusas

According to the IBESTAT figures cited in the latest report, Ibiza and Formentera received 699,937 tourists during August.

The breakdown was:

  • 153,348 tourists resident in other Spanish autonomous communities

  • 546,588 international tourists

  • International visitors represented 78.09% of the total

  • Visitors from other parts of Spain represented 21.91%

The number of tourists increased by 4.42% compared with August 2025 under the FRONTUR figures cited by IBESTAT.

More visitors but fewer overnight stays

One of the more significant details in the August figures is the difference between tourist arrivals and overnight stays.

The Pitiusas recorded 4,182,199 overnight stays during August, 1.87% fewer than in August 2025.

That means the islands received more visitors while recording fewer total nights.

The combination of the two figures corresponds to an average stay of approximately six nights per tourist.

This is an important distinction when assessing the tourism figures. An increase in arrivals does not necessarily translate into a longer stay or a corresponding increase in overnight demand.

International tourists account for most arrivals

International visitors continued to represent the majority of tourism to Ibiza and Formentera.

The 546,588 international tourists recorded during August accounted for more than three quarters of all visitors to the two islands.

Their number increased by 4.39% compared with August 2025.

The domestic market also increased, with 153,348 tourists from other Spanish autonomous communities representing a 4.50% annual increase.

The two markets therefore recorded very similar rates of growth during the month.

Spending grows faster than visitor numbers

The difference becomes even clearer when looking at the cumulative figures for the first eight months of 2026.

From January through August, Ibiza and Formentera received 2,824,764 tourists, an increase of 2.13% compared with the same period of 2025.

Those visitors generated €3.603 billion in tourist spending, representing an increase of 7.34%.

Spending therefore grew more than five percentage points faster than the number of visitors during the first eight months of the year.

August was not the biggest spending month of the summer

Although August passed the €1 billion mark, it did not produce the highest monthly tourist expenditure recorded during the 2026 summer.

According to the IBESTAT figures reported by Cadena SER, July reached approximately €1.059 billion in tourist spending in the Pitiusas.

August's €1.018 billion was therefore below the July total, despite remaining substantially above €1 billion.

British visitors stand out among international markets

The international market generated the majority of spending during August.

According to the latest figures reported from IBESTAT, international visitors accounted for approximately €879 million, compared with €138.3 million generated by tourists from other parts of Spain.

The British market was particularly significant.

Visitors from the United Kingdom generated approximately €239 million in spending during August, an increase of 29.8% compared with August 2025.

Average spending by British visitors reached approximately €1,415 per tourist.

German visitors also increased their spending, with daily expenditure reported to have risen by 31% to approximately €1,437.

Higher spending does not necessarily mean more real economic growth

The increase in tourist expenditure is an important indicator for the island economy, but the figures need to be interpreted carefully.

A higher nominal amount spent by visitors does not necessarily mean that the tourism sector generated the same percentage increase in real economic activity.

Part of the increase can reflect higher prices for accommodation, food, transport and other services.

The distinction is particularly relevant when comparing spending growth with visitor numbers. In the first eight months of 2026, spending increased 7.34%, while arrivals increased 2.13%.

The wider Balearic picture

At regional level, the Balearic Islands were the leading Spanish destination by tourist spending during August among the autonomous communities.

INE recorded €4.065 billion in international tourist expenditure in the Balearics during the month, an annual increase of 4.2%.

The islands accounted for 22.8% of total international tourist expenditure in Spain during August.

Average daily spending by international tourists in the Balearics reached €243, compared with €202 for Spain as a whole.

The Ibiza and Formentera figures are a more specific destination-level measure and should not be directly substituted for the wider Balearic total.

A strong spending month for Ibiza and Formentera

The August figures show a tourism market in which visitor numbers and spending are moving at different rates.

Almost 700,000 tourists visited Ibiza and Formentera during the month, while spending exceeded €1 billion.

At the same time, overnight stays declined compared with August 2025, indicating that the increase in visitor numbers was accompanied by shorter overall stays.

For the first eight months of the year, the picture remains one of rising arrivals and substantially faster growth in tourist expenditure.

The figures provide a snapshot of the economic scale of the 2026 tourism season, while also highlighting the importance of looking beyond visitor numbers alone when assessing how the season is performing.
