Ibiza Scientist Cristina Linares to Speak at Muy Science Fest in Barcelona

01 de October de 2026

Ibiza-born scientist Cristina Linares will take part in the first Barcelona edition of Muy Science Fest, a major science communication event bringing researchers and science communicators together at the Teatre Coliseum on Tuesday, October 6.

Linares is a professor of Ecology at the Universitat de Barcelona and a researcher specialising in biodiversity, marine ecosystems, conservation and global change. The Universitat de Barcelona confirms that she has held a professorship in the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences since 2020.

A focus on the Mediterranean

Linares will address the impact of rising sea temperatures on Mediterranean marine ecosystems, with her presentation focusing on what happens beneath the surface when the Mediterranean warms.

The festival describes her talk around the question of what happens in the Mediterranean when temperatures rise by one degree. It will explore the effects of marine heatwaves on marine ecosystems, including the mass mortality events that have affected organisms such as corals and gorgonians.

Her research focuses on understanding how Mediterranean marine benthic ecosystems respond to global change, with the aim of supporting their conservation and restoration. She is also associated with the MedRecover research group.

Eight speakers at the Barcelona festival

Muy Science Fest Barcelona will bring together eight scientists and science communicators covering subjects including human evolution, epigenetics, mathematics, neuroscience, astrophysics, physics, marine ecology and ancient history.

Alongside Linares, the programme includes Manel Esteller, Mar Mezcua, Eva Miranda, Rodrigo Quian Quiroga, Antonio Rosas, Javier Santaolalla and Mariàngela Taulé.

The event is being held for the first time in Barcelona following previous editions in Madrid, Málaga and Salamanca.

When and where

Muy Science Fest Barcelona takes place on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at the Teatre Coliseum in Barcelona.

The festival's official website currently lists doors opening at 18:30 and the event beginning at 19:00, with tickets priced at €5 and limited capacity. The organisers say proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Institut Guttmann, a hospital specialising in neurorehabilitation.

For Ibiza, the event provides an opportunity to see one of the island's scientists taking her work on Mediterranean ecosystems to a wider public audience in Barcelona.
