Spanish Pensions in 2026: Maximum, Minimum and What Could Change in 2027

25 de September de 2026

Spain's pension system has been updated for 2026, with the general contributory pension increase set at 2.7%, while minimum and non-contributory pensions received larger increases.

The maximum public pension is now €3,359.60 per month, while minimum pension amounts vary according to the type of pension, age and family circumstances.

The figures apply nationwide, including pensioners living in Ibiza and the rest of the Balearic Islands.

The maximum pension in 2026

The maximum amount that can be received from public pensions in 2026 is:

  • €3,359.60 per month

  • €47,034.40 per year

The annual limit takes into account the 14-payment structure normally used for pensions, including two extra payments.

This is a maximum limit for public pensions and does not mean every pensioner receives this amount.

There is no single minimum pension

Unlike the maximum, there is no single minimum amount applicable to every pensioner.

The minimum depends on factors including the type of pension, the age of the beneficiary and whether they have a spouse who is financially dependent on them.

For example, for a retirement pension at age 65 or above in 2026, the minimum annual amounts are:

Situation Minimum annual pension
Spouse dependent on pensioner €17,592.40
No spouse €13,106.80
Spouse not financially dependent €12,441.80

For a pensioner under 65, the corresponding amounts are €17,592.40, €12,262.60 and €11,590.60 respectively.

These are statutory minimum amounts and can be subject to income requirements for receiving a minimum-income supplement.

Higher minimum for certain cases

Higher minimum amounts apply in some circumstances involving severe disability.

For a person aged 65 or over whose retirement pension derives from a situation classified as great incapacity, the 2026 minimums are:

  • €26,385.80 a year with a dependent spouse

  • €19,660.20 without a spouse

  • €18,662 with a spouse who is not financially dependent

The precise entitlement depends on the circumstances established under the pension rules.

Non-contributory pensions increased more

Non-contributory pensions received a substantially larger percentage increase than ordinary contributory pensions in 2026.

The annual amount for a full non-contributory retirement or disability pension is €8,803.20, equivalent to €628.80 in each of 14 payments.

The increase was 11.4% for 2026.

The higher increase reflects the separate revaluation rules applied to non-contributory benefits and other minimum-income measures.

General contributory pensions rose 2.7%

For ordinary contributory pensions, the general revaluation for 2026 was 2.7%.

The government says this percentage corresponds to the average inflation rate used under the pension revaluation mechanism, based on the relevant CPI period.

Minimum pensions received higher increases in many cases, depending on the category.

This means it is not accurate to say that every pension in Spain increased by exactly 2.7%.

What is the average pension?

The latest official figures are now from September 2026.

The average pension across the Social Security system was €1,374.60 per month, 4.6% higher than a year earlier.

The average retirement pension was €1,576.10 per month, an annual increase of 4.5%.

The September payroll covered 10,547,417 pensions received by more than 9.5 million people. The total monthly contributory-pension payroll reached €14.4982 billion.

These averages should not be confused with either the legal maximum or minimum pension.

How much do self-employed pensioners receive on average?

The average retirement pension differs considerably between Social Security regimes.

In September, the average retirement pension under the General Social Security Regime was €1,734.70 per month.

For pensioners in the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers, the average was €1,062.80 per month.

These are averages across the respective groups and do not represent fixed pension amounts.

What will happen to pensions in 2027?

The 2027 increase has not yet been officially determined.

The final revaluation will depend on the inflation data used under the statutory pension-revaluation formula.

Some private-sector economic forecasts have suggested an increase of around 3.2%, but that is an estimate rather than an official figure.

It would therefore be premature to state that pensions will definitely rise by 3.2% in January 2027.

Five consecutive years of increases

The current pension system has produced several consecutive annual increases.

The general revaluation for contributory pensions was:

  • 2022: 2.5%

  • 2023: 8.5%

  • 2024: 3.8%

  • 2025: 2.8%

  • 2026: 2.7%

The 2026 figure is the rate currently established under the applicable legislation.

The size of the increase has varied considerably from year to year because it is linked to inflation and the specific rules governing minimum and non-contributory pensions.

What pensioners in Ibiza should know

The national pension amounts apply to pensioners throughout Spain, including Ibiza and Formentera.

There is no separate statutory maximum pension for the Balearic Islands. However, the actual amount received by an individual can vary substantially depending on their contribution record, pension type, retirement circumstances and entitlement to minimum supplements or other benefits.

For 2026, the clearest reference points are therefore the €3,359.60 monthly maximum, the different statutory minimums according to personal circumstances, and the latest national average of €1,374.60 per month.

The next major change will come with the official calculation of the 2027 revaluation, which cannot yet be stated as a final percentage.
