Ibiza Closes Sa Penya Cavity Used for Occasional Overnight Stays

01 de October de 2026

Ibiza Town Hall has installed metal bars to close off a cavity at the Sa Penya viewpoint after the space was found to be occasionally used for overnight stays.

The intervention was carried out on Tuesday, September 29, at the viewpoint in Sa Penya, in Ibiza Town.

According to the Town Hall, the cavity presented an evident safety risk because of its characteristics. It had also become a point where rubbish accumulated.

Part of wider cleaning work

The closure follows cleaning work carried out in recent days in the Sa Penya area, as well as at Sa Pedrera and around Casa Broner.

The municipal intervention included the removal of accumulated waste from these areas, which include difficult-to-access sections of the coastline and historic neighbourhood.

The Town Hall said the newly installed bars are intended to prevent further access to the cavity and address the safety and waste problems associated with the space.

A small intervention in a historic area

Sa Penya is the former fishermen's quarter beneath the Baluard de Santa Llúcia, at the edge of Ibiza's historic centre. The neighbourhood rises along the cliffs above the port and is characterised by steep streets and narrow pedestrian lanes.

The area forms part of the wider historic landscape surrounding Dalt Vila and the city's Renaissance fortifications.

The Town Hall's latest action specifically concerns the cavity at the viewpoint. It does not represent a closure of the Sa Penya neighbourhood or its public viewpoints.

Safety and waste concerns

The municipality said the cavity's occasional use for overnight stays created an additional safety concern, while the accumulation of rubbish had turned the location into a problem area.

The closure follows the cleaning operation and is intended to prevent the cavity from being used again for this purpose.

The action is another example of the practical maintenance work taking place around Ibiza Town's historic and coastal areas, where difficult terrain can make both access and waste removal more complicated.

For visitors, the main Sa Penya streets and public areas remain accessible, subject to any local works or restrictions in force at the time of a visit.
