Hotels across the Balearic Islands recorded strong performance in August, with more travellers, high occupancy and rising room rates despite visitors staying for slightly shorter periods.

The latest provisional hotel statistics from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) show that 2.1 million travellers stayed in hotels across the islands during August, around 3.8% more than in August 2025.

At the same time, total hotel overnight stays fell slightly as the average length of stay became shorter.

Hotel Stays Become Shorter

The average hotel stay in the Balearics fell from 5.53 days in August 2025 to 5.32 days in August 2026.

Total overnight stays were approximately 11.3 million, a slight year-on-year decline.

The change reflects a wider pattern of shorter trips. While more people stayed in Balearic hotels, they spent fewer nights on average.

The trend was also visible in Mallorca, where hotel industry representatives have pointed to an increase in shorter breaks.

Occupancy Remains Among Spain's Highest

Despite the small decline in overnight stays, the Balearics recorded the highest hotel occupancy rate among Spain's autonomous communities in August.

Hotels reached an occupancy rate of approximately 90.2% of available beds, compared with 76.8% across Spain.

International visitors continued to dominate the market, accounting for approximately 89.5% of hotel guests in the Balearics and 92.1% of overnight stays.

The islands also accounted for around 33% of hotel nights booked by non-residents in Spain during the month.

Hotel Prices Continue to Rise

The increase in hotel activity was accompanied by higher prices.

Hotel prices in the Balearics increased by approximately 7.5% year-on-year in August, compared with a 6.3% increase across Spain.

The average daily rate for an occupied hotel room, known as ADR, increased by 9.2% compared with August 2025.

Revenue per available room, or RevPAR, also increased by 7.3% in the Balearics, compared with 6.9% nationally.

These indicators show stronger room revenue performance, although they should not be interpreted as a direct measure of hotel profit because they do not account for all operating costs.

Mallorca Remains a Major Hotel Destination

Mallorca continued to account for a substantial share of Spain's hotel activity.

The island recorded more than 8.5 million overnight stays during August, placing it among the country's leading tourist destinations by hotel activity.

Calvià was also among the Spanish municipalities recording the highest number of hotel nights, alongside major destinations including Barcelona and Madrid.

More Than 80,000 Hotel Workers

The scale of the Balearic hotel sector was also reflected in employment.

In August, 1,353 hotel establishments were open across the islands, providing 174,519 rooms and 373,276 beds.

The sector employed 80,659 people during the month.

A Changing Tourism Pattern

The August figures highlight a notable shift in the Balearic tourism market.

The islands welcomed more hotel guests while the average stay became shorter. At the same time, hotel prices, average room rates and revenue per available room all increased.

The figures therefore point to stronger hotel revenue performance despite a small reduction in total overnight stays.

However, revenue growth should not automatically be described as increased profit. Higher room prices and revenue can coexist with higher operating, staffing, energy, food and other business costs.

For the Balearics, the August data provide another indication that the performance of tourism cannot be measured by visitor numbers alone. Occupancy, length of stay, room prices, revenue and operating costs all contribute to the wider picture of the islands' tourism economy.
