Ibiza will welcome an evening of jazz and flamenco this Sunday as the Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa takes over Espai Cultural Can Ventosa with special guests Diego Amador and Penélope Tafur.

The concert takes place on Sunday, September 27, at 7:00pm, bringing together the island's established big-band sound with flamenco piano, vocals and dance.

Led by musician and trombonist Vicent Tur, the Big Band will be joined by Sevillian pianist, singer and composer Diego Amador and Ibiza-born flamenco dancer Penélope Tafur. Tickets are priced at €10.

From Eivissa Jazz to a full flamenco programme

The concert builds on a project first presented by the Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa at the 2025 edition of Eivissa Jazz.

That programme marked the formation's first incorporation of flamenco into its repertoire, with Penélope Tafur joining the musicians for the performance.

For the Can Ventosa concert, the group is expanding that material with new pieces and original compositions by Diego Amador.

The result brings together the instrumentation and arrangements of a big band with elements of flamenco, creating a programme that moves between the two musical traditions.

Diego Amador joins the band

Diego Amador is a pianist, singer and composer from Seville whose career has focused heavily on the relationship between flamenco and jazz.

His musical influences include jazz figures such as Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, alongside major flamenco artists including Paco de Lucía and Tomatito.

Amador is also part of a prominent musical family. He is the brother of Raimundo and Rafael Amador, founders of Pata Negra, and previously participated in the group as a keyboard player and percussionist.

His involvement in Sunday's performance will allow the Big Band to incorporate several of his own compositions into the new arrangements.

Penélope Tafur returns to the Big Band

For Penélope Tafur, the concert represents a return to the ensemble in a different role.

Before developing her career as a flamenco dancer, Tafur studied trumpet and was a member of the Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa.

She later continued her musical studies at the Taller de Músics in Barcelona and subsequently moved to Seville to continue her development in flamenco dance.

Her career as a dancer has included performances both in Ibiza and elsewhere. In 2024, she and her flamenco ensemble opened the III Jornades Flamenques de Caló de s’Oli.

She also performed this summer with the Banda Simfònica Ciutat d’Eivissa during the Festes de la Terra programme dedicated to composer Manuel de Falla.

Sunday's performance will be her second collaboration with the Big Band as a flamenco dancer, following their appearance together at Eivissa Jazz 2025.

Jazz meets flamenco in Ibiza

The concert offers a different musical setting from the island's better-known summer nightlife, placing a large jazz ensemble at the centre of a programme built around flamenco.

The arrangements will combine the Big Band's orchestral sound with Amador's piano and vocals and Tafur's flamenco dance.

The performance is directed by Vicent Tur, who has led the ensemble since its formation and is responsible for the musical arrangements for the project.
